A software error in New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle System led to about four hundred non-citizens voting several years ago, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced on Tuesday.
The error, which occurred under Governor Phil Murphy, added about 6,600 individuals to voter rolls even though they had indicated that they were not citizens. Sherrill’s announcement comes as Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin alleged that New Jersey had tens of thousands of non-citizens on its voter rolls last week.
“Our preliminary analysis shows fewer than 400 individuals who were newly registered for the first time because of the error voted. They were registered as Democrats, Republicans and Unaffiliated voters and were scattered across the state,” Sherrill said in a statement on Facebook.
An investigation has been launched to determine the origins of the software error, which disturbed voter rolls between June 2023 and June 2024.
As part of its crackdown on election fraud, the Trump administration has been pushing for the SAVE Act, which would impose stricter requirements for voters to prove their identity.
Sherrill held a press conference today with reporters, and asserted that the 400 ballots had no effect on the outcome of any election.
“We have no evidence at this time that any elections were swayed,” Sherrill said, addressing concerns of election fraud.
In both the 2024 presidential election and the 2025 gubernatorial election, Kamala Harris and Mikie Sherrill won by several hundred thousand votes.
Sherrill blamed the previous administration for the failures of the registration system, and announced that the Motor Vehicles Commission would immediately begin an audit to remove non-citizens.
