The Red Wings' next general manager would be wise to consider signing this defenseman to a PTO.

After an ugly finish to the 2025-26 season, the Detroit Red Wings have added a few new players to their roster this season. Among their most notable additions include Viktor Arvidsson, Keegan Kolesar, Daniil Tarasov, and Jacob Bryson.

However, when looking at the Red Wings' roster, it is clear that they should not be done adding to their group yet. They would benefit by bringing in a bit more defensive depth before the start of the 2025-26 season.

When looking at the remaining unrestricted free agents (UFAs) still available for the taking, one player who stands out as a fascinating potential PTO target for the Red Wings is defenseman John Klingberg.

While Klingberg has yet to be signed this offseason, he showed last season with the San Jose Sharks that he can still make an impact. In 56 games with the Pacific Division club last season, he recorded 10 goals, 17 assists, and 27 points. With numbers like these, the 12-year NHL veteran is still able to provide solid offense from the point. Due to this, it would make sense for the Red Wings to take a gamble on him with a PTO.

The Red Wings would benefit by bringing in another puck-moving defenseman, and Klingberg is the top UFA option still available for the taking. Furthermore, with the right side of the Red Wings' blueline not being the strongest, there would be no harm in them taking a gamble on a former All-Star defenseman like Klingberg.

Where could Klingberg fit in the Red Wings' lineup if signed

If Klingberg landed a contract with the Red Wings, he would provide them with another solid defenseman to consider for their bottom pairing. He would also give them a clear option for their power play, as the veteran defenseman thrives on the man advantage. He showed this last season with San Jose, as five out of his 10 goals were on the power play.

However, even if Klingberg was an extra defenseman for the Red Wings, he could still be a solid addition to their roster. NHL clubs can never have enough defensive depth with how often injuries occur. Due to this, the offensive defenseman could be a useful player for the Red Wings to have around for insurance.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if the Red Wings take a chance on Klingberg. When looking at the bounce-back year he had in San Jose, it should only be a matter of time before he lands a PTO or contract from a club.
