It's a favorite for good reason.

It's a favorite for good reason.

For many couples, a honeymoon is the ultimate opportunity to kick off a marriage with unforgettable memories and romance. While destinations like French Polynesia, the Maldives, and Italy often top honeymoon wish lists, one U.S. destination recently earned a spot among the world's most romantic getaways.

Online booking platform SafariBookings recently set out to find the most romantic honeymoon destinations in the world. For its study, which was obtained by Travel + Leisure via email, it analyzed Tripadvisor hotel reviews from popular honeymoon destinations, ranking locations based on the percentage of reviews mentioning "honeymoon" and "romantic." Maui, Hawaii ranked third worldwide, behind only the Maldives (Lankanfushi Island) and the Caribbean.

Maui is the Aloha State's second-largest island and is renowned for its lush rainforests, volcanic landscapes, and golden beaches. So it's no surprise that many of Maui’s most romantic experiences revolve around its spectacular natural scenery. An early-morning drive and a reserved sunrise permit are well worth the effort at Haleakalā National Park. From the 10,000-foot summit, couples can watch dawn break above the clouds as the volcanic crater is slowly illuminated in golden light—a breathtaking way to begin a new chapter together. At the other end of the day, Makena Cove, known locally as Secret Beach, is arguably one of the most intimate sunset settings on the island.

The legendary 64-mile Road to Hana gives couples a full day of unhurried adventure through extraordinary terrain that winds past rainforests, waterfalls, and beaches. A popular stop along the route is Waianapanapa State Park, where visitors can explore freshwater caves, dramatic ocean blowholes, and one of the island's famous black-sand beaches. Another can’t-miss stop, the Pipiwai Trail, leads hikers on a four-mile round-trip journey through a serene bamboo forest before ending at the towering 400-foot Waimoku Falls.

Honeymooners seeking to balance active days with relaxation can choose from a range of resorts specializing in romantic escapes. Four Seasons Resort Lanai and Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea offer experiences that include intimate dinners under the stars, personalized mindfulness sessions, private catamaran tours, and Hawaiian-inspired couples’ massages. Travelers can also enjoy a luxury spa experience without a resort stay at Ho’omana Spa, where a two-hour Luxurious Couples Retreat treatment includes soaking in side-by-side stone tubs infused with Hawaiian salt, native herbs, and florals, followed by the spa’s signature lomilomi massage.

As for eats, Mama’s Fish House remains one of the island's most sought-after reservations. Set on a secluded cove just outside Paia, the iconic oceanfront restaurant has earned a devoted following for its hyper-local seafood, much of it caught the same day by local fishermen whose names often appear on the menu. Reservations are frequently booked months in advance, but couples who plan ahead are rewarded with one of Hawaii's most treasured dining experiences.
