This classic ice cream flavor is America’s favorite, according to a new report

Instacart shares the flavor that’s filling the country’s carts the most.

Keeping cool during the summer heat can be done in several delicious ways. One of them is indulging in a few scoops of your favorite ice cream. Ice cream occupies a sizable portion of the freezer aisle at most grocery stores, offering a variety of brands and flavors for shoppers to enjoy. While the options seem endless these days, there are some favorite flavors that Americans seem always to come back to.

This year, Instacart dug into a year’s worth of purchase data from 2025 to find out which ice cream flavors ended up filling the country’s carts the most, in addition to the most popular, unique flavors for every state.

The Top 10 Ice Cream Flavors in the U.S.

1. Vanilla
2. Chocolate
3. Cookie Dough
4. Cookies and Cream
5. Chocolate Fudge/Brownie
6. Peanut Butter
7. Mint Chocolate Chip
8. Coffee
9. Strawberry
10. Cherry

According to the report, vanilla remains the favorite across the country, accounting for over one-fifth of ice cream purchases for the year. It’s no surprise, as vanilla is a dependable flavor for pairing with pies, crumbles, tarts, sundaes, cakes, and more. Following vanilla were chocolate and cookie dough.

The rest of the top 10 leaned into nostalgia, with cookies and cream, chocolate fudge/brownie, peanut butter, and mint chocolate chip joining the list, while more adventurous flavors such as coffee, strawberry, and cherry rounded it out.

Since vanilla came out on top nationwide, Instacart also analyzed the most-ordered flavors by state. The results revealed regional favorites, including several flavors that didn’t crack the overall top 10.

In the western part of the U.S., rocky road took the lead. Coffee was the top choice in New England and in Oregon, New Mexico, and Hawaii. The South favored butter pecan, while the Mid-Atlantic preferred mint chocolate chip. Across the Midwest, vanilla continued to conquer.

Some of the most unique flavors were found as favorites in Wisconsin with Moose Tracks, a fudge and peanut butter cup classic, and in Tennessee with cheesecake ice cream. In the Mountain West, cherry is the favorite.
