This Blink-And-You'll-Miss-It Town in Connecticut Is So Worth Exploring

There are so many charming small towns in Connecticut that it’s hard to list them all. At times, it feels like the whole state is made up of incredible teeny-tiny towns. If you’re wondering what the smallest town in Connecticut is, though, it’s the one we’re featuring today: Union. This little town is tucked away in Tolland County, up in the Quiet Corner, right along the state line with Massachusetts. Its population is only around 800, making it the least-populated town in Connecticut. If you’re looking for a quiet escape without a lot of bells and whistles, it’s a wonderful destination for a day trip or weekend getaway.

As is the case in many small towns in New England, Union’s town green serves as the social hub of the area. The biggest event held in Union each year is Old Home Day, a celebration of small-town life that includes a craft market, live entertainment, and food. The event typically takes place each summer.

The town green isn’t the only place for recreation in Union, though. Bigelow Hollow State Park is a sprawling 516-acre preserve offering numerous recreational opportunities. Right next to Bigelow Hollow State Park is Mashapaug Lake, a 297-acre lake that’s perfect for boating and swimming in the warm months. It’s a great spot for winter ice fishing, too. Need even more room to explore? Nipmuck State Forest is on the other side of Mashapaug Lake. The more than 9,000-acre forest has miles of hiking trails.

One of the best restaurants in Union, Connecticut, is also among the most unique in the state: The Traveler Restaurant gives out three free books with each meal. With outdoor fun, unique dining options, and small-town charm, Union may be tiny, but it’s a great place for a few days away.
