In a Nutshell
We taste-tested 6 brands of salted popcorn you're likely to find at your local supermarket or online. To find the very best ones, we tasted each without knowing which was which. We found one winner we'd happily eat the entire bag of and two runners-up.
Salted popcorn is the purest expression of popcorn. Unlike buttered popcorn, which can lean on rich flavorings and movie-theater nostalgia, salted popcorn has nowhere to hide. With little more than popcorn, oil, and salt in the bag, every detail matters: the quality of the kernels, the freshness of the popcorn, the level of seasoning, and the texture of each bite.
That's what makes shopping for bagged popcorn surprisingly tricky. At first glance, most brands look nearly identical. But crack open a few bags side by side and the differences become obvious. Some are fluffy and crisp, with a deeply toasted corn flavor and just enough salt to keep you reaching back into the bag. Others are stale, bland, or oddly greasy, tasting more like packing material than popcorn.
To find the best salted popcorn, we rounded up six brands available at supermarkets and online retailers and tasted them without knowing which was which. A few stood out for their seasoning, texture, and unmistakable corn flavor. In the end, we found one clear winner and two runners-up we'd happily keep stocked in our pantries.
The Criteria
A great bagged salted popcorn should make you want to keep reaching into the bag. With no butter, cheese powder, or other flavorings to distract from the basics, we were looking for popcorn that excelled at the fundamentals: corn flavor, texture, and seasoning.
The best popcorns were crisp, airy, and fresh-tasting, with fluffy kernels that shattered lightly between your teeth. They had a nutty corn flavor that remained the star of the show, supported by enough salt to make each bite craveable without turning the popcorn into a salt lick.
We docked points for popcorn that was chewy, greasy, stale, unevenly seasoned, or filled with hard kernels. Popcorn that tasted bland or lacked a distinct corn flavor also fell short. We were looking for a snack we'd happily eat by the handful—and then reach back into the bag for another handful.
Overall Winner
Popcorn Indiana Crispy & Savory Sea Salt Popcorn
Popcorn Indiana won our taste test because it nailed the fundamentals. It had a pronounced corn flavor, an even coating of salt, and a fluffy texture that kept several tasters reaching back into the bowl for more. Our editorial director, Daniel, called it a "totally solid" popcorn he'd "happily eat," while Megan, our associate editorial director, praised its "good corn flavor" and noted that it was "pretty salty but not overwhelmingly so."
Its seasoning was one of its strongest assets. I appreciated the generous salt level, which kept me coming back for another handful. Daniel also noted its "good clean salinity," and ranked it among his favorites of the day.
Megan and I enjoyed its soft, fluffy crunch, though our associate director of visuals, Amanda, and associate culinary editor, Laila, both found it a bit too soft. Even so, the popcorn consistently scored well for its seasoning and corn flavor. In the end, its combination of craveable saltiness, pronounced corn flavor, and easy-eating texture helped it rise above the competition.
Runners-Up
365 by Whole Foods Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil Popcorn
365 by Whole Foods stood out for its distinctive flavor. Several tasters picked up on a richness they couldn't quite identify during the blind tasting, which we later learned came from the popcorn's inclusion of extra-virgin olive oil. Daniel appreciated that added richness, noting that he could "eat a lot of it" and that the fat on the popcorn reminded him of butter.
While its flavor earned praise, its texture was what kept it from earning the top spot. I found the kernels smaller and less fluffy than our winner, and our visual editor, Jessie, noted that the seasoning was lighter. Still, Laila described it as both "simple" and "solid," which neatly sums up why it landed in the runner-up spot.
Boom Chicka Pop Sea Salt Popcorn
Boom Chicka Pop earned its runner-up spot by doing everything reasonably well. It had an airy, crunchy texture and a clean corn flavor that several tasters appreciated. Amanda praised its "nice corn taste and a proper amount of salt," while Megan liked its fluffy texture and the absence of any burnt or artificial flavors. A few tasters found it slightly under-seasoned compared to our winner. Still, its balanced flavor and satisfying crunch made it an easy crowd-pleaser.

Key Takeaways and Conclusion
Our tasting reinforced just how much the fundamentals matter in salted popcorn. Without butter, cheese powder, caramel, or other flavorings to lean on, every kernel has to pull its weight. The best popcorns balanced three things well: corn flavor, texture, and seasoning.
One of the biggest surprises was how important corn flavor proved to be. While that may sound obvious, several samples tasted surprisingly muted, relying more on salt or added fats than the flavor of the popcorn itself. The brands we kept returning to had a distinct toasted-corn character.
We also found that the type of fat used could greatly affect the final product. Some brands lean on more flavorful oils, such as olive or coconut oil, which become part of the popcorn's flavor profile. Our winner, Popcorn Indiana, takes the opposite approach. Made with corn, vegetable oil, and sea salt, it lets the flavor of the popcorn remain front and center. Combined with its generous seasoning and fluffy texture, that simplicity ultimately worked in its favor.
Will any salted popcorn satisfy a snack craving? Probably. But when a product is this simple, small differences become noticeable. That's why Popcorn Indiana earned our top spot: It delivered the corn flavor, salt level, and texture that had us reaching for it again and again.
Our Testing Methodology
All taste tests are conducted with brands completely hidden and without discussion. Tasters taste samples in random order. For example, taster A may taste sample one first, while taster B will taste sample six first. This is to prevent palate fatigue from unfairly giving any one sample an advantage. Tasters are asked to fill out tasting sheets, ranking the samples according to various criteria. All data is tabulated, and results are calculated with no editorial input to provide the most impartial representation of actual results possible.
