Chicken nuggets may seem like one of the hardest fast food items to mess up, but the gap between a good nugget and a disappointing one is much bigger than you might think.
The best versions have a crisp exterior, juicy chicken, and enough seasoning to stand on their own without relying entirely on sauce. The worst are either mostly breading, painfully bland, or taste like they have been sitting under a heat lamp for way too long.
I tried nuggets from six major fast food chains and ranked them from least to most favorite. Some childhood classics held up, while a few popular picks did not impress me nearly as much as I expected.
6. Shake Shack
Shake Shack’s Chicken Bites had a generous amount of meat, but the breading completely threw me off.
The chicken itself was substantial and juicy enough, but the coating had an unpleasant flavor reminiscent of old frying oil. It lingered after each bite and made it hard to enjoy what otherwise could have been a solid nugget.
5. Burger King
Burger King’s nuggets were almost entirely breading.
The coating overwhelmed the small amount of chicken inside, and the overall flavor fell flat. They were not especially crispy or juicy, and even with sauce, there was not much here that made me want another one.
4. McDonald’s
McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets are iconic, and I will always have a soft spot for them because I grew up eating them.
They are not the most flavorful nuggets on this list, but the crispy exterior and juicy center are enough to keep them solidly in the middle. They are familiar, consistent, and especially good when dipped in Sweet ‘N Sour sauce.
3. Chick-fil-A
Chick-fil-A’s nuggets are made from whole pieces of chicken breast, which I definitely appreciated.
The chicken was tender, and the breading had a nice texture, but some pieces were surprisingly bland. They were good overall, just not as flavorful or exciting as the top two.
2. Wendy’s
Wendy’s nuggets were easily some of the juiciest I tried.
The chicken had great flavor, and when I squeezed one, juice literally dripped out. The breading was crisp without being too heavy, and each bite had a satisfying balance of seasoning and moisture.
These came very close to taking the top spot.
1. KFC
KFC came out on top because it delivered everything I wanted in a chicken nugget.
The nuggets are made with white-meat chicken pieces, but the seasoning is what really set them apart. The breading had a similar texture and shape to some of the other nuggets I tried, yet it carried much more flavor and made every bite feel complete even without sauce.
The chicken was juicy, the coating was well-seasoned, and the overall experience felt closer to eating a small piece of fried chicken than a standard fast food nugget.
KFC may not be the first chain people think of when they hear “chicken nuggets,” but based on this taste test, it absolutely should be.
