Lemonade and blueberries are the stars of this easy but impressive beverage.

Lemonade and blueberries are the stars of this easy but impressive beverage.

If you’re a frequent Trader Joe’s shopper, there’s one content creator you should be following. There are plenty of TikTok and Instagram accounts dedicated to sharing the best Trader Joe’s products to try, but Amanda Hernandez (@amandamaehome) focuses more on what to do with your TJ’s haul once you get home.

If you want an easy hack for upgrading Trader Joe’s ice cream-filled cooking dough bites or an idea for a dip you can make with ingredients from the grocery chain, Hernandez has a suggestion. As you scroll through the creator’s feed, it’s clear she specializes in one thing: turning Trader Joe’s products into creative cocktails.

From lychee margaritas served directly from cans of Trader Joe’s Sparkling Lychee Juice Beverage to Irish coffee shots crafted with the supermarket’s seasonal Irish coffee whiskey, Hernandez has turned dozens of beloved TJ’s products into easy cocktails you can make at home. But her most popular, and the one I’ve had bookmarked since she first shared it, is called “Trader Joe’s blueberry whipped lemonade.”

If you want a tart, sweet, and refreshing cocktail that requires only four ingredients, this Trader Joe’s-based creation is for you. Hernandez’s recipe calls for vodka, heavy cream, Trader Joe’s Fresh Squeezed Lemonade, and the store’s freeze-dried blueberries. The premade lemonade — made with just lemon juice, sugar, and water — is a fan favorite, but if you don’t have easy access to a Trader Joe’s, you could use bottled lemonade and freeze-dried blueberries from another grocery chain.

Hernandez starts by adding ice to two tall glasses, then pouring in the desired amount of vodka — she opts for 2–3 ounces — and enough lemonade to fill most of each glass, leaving about 2 inches of space at the top. The creator then adds a few handfuls of freeze-dried blueberries to a Ziploc bag, seals it, and crushes the berries with a rolling pin until they become a fine dust. (If you don’t have a rolling pin, a heavy skillet or wine bottle would work well too. Just be careful not to scratch your counters or break a bottle, and place the Ziploc bag on a rag to cushion it.)

Hernandez combines a spoonful of the blueberry dust with a generous splash of the cream in a separate glass. Using a handheld milk frother, she whips them together until the milk is a blue-purple hue and the cream is light and foamy. (You’re looking for a texture akin to Starbucks’ cold foam, not something as thick as whipped cream.) If you don’t have a handheld milk frother, don’t stress; you can combine the two ingredients in a small bowl and whisk them.

Once your whipped blueberry foam is ready, pour it over the lemonade and vodka mixture, then sprinkle a few more crushed freeze-dried blueberries on top to finish. This dual-toned drink is more creative than a vodka-lemonade and requires only a fraction of the extra effort. The blueberry foam is also customizable — swap in freeze-dried strawberries if desired (which you can also get at Trader Joe’s) — and would be excellent on top of a matcha latte.
