New relocation programs offer cash, home-buying assistance, student loan relief, and other perks to attract new residents.
A fresh start can be expensive, but some states are offering to help foot the relocation bills of new residents.
Over half a dozen states across the South, Midwest, and Northeast are offering financial relocation incentives, ranging from cash to down payment assistance, to attract new residents, according to the online marketplace MakeMyMove.
“These programs go beyond simple cash bonuses and often include housing support, career opportunities and community integration perks designed to help newcomers and their families settle in,” the company noted. “Whether you’re a remote worker, an in-person professional, or an entrepreneur considering a fresh start, 2026 offers more options than ever before.”
Michigan, Arkansas, and Texas are the biggest spenders, providing newcomers with up to $26,400 in relocation incentives. In Michigan, for example, the city of Jackson offers $25,000 in down payment assistance, with the option to apply for an additional $10,000 through the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, to professionals who qualify for the city’s 100 Homes program. Prospective buyers must earn 120 percent of the Area Median Income, per the program.
In Texas, which boasts an overall strong economy, the city of Texarkana will pay remote workers who earn at least $60,000 annually up to $5,000 to move there, and add to that a tuition discount at Texas A&M University-Texarkana, along with memberships to multiple cultural and co-working organizations.
Maine, Indiana, and Kansas offer even more incentives to full-time remote workers. Maine’s Live + Work program supports new residents with job opportunities, industry insights, and relocation guides, while the Opportunity Maine Tax Credit reimburses student loan payments for college graduates. And in Kansas communities like Lincoln County, Hutchinson, and Ottawa, both in-person and remote workers can receive up to $15,500 in welcoming perks.
Meanwhile, those who choose to make their home base in the Jacksonville region of Illinois will receive a $5,000 cash relocation bonus, $300 in “Chamber Checks” redeemable at more than 80 local businesses, and free broadband internet. In Indiana, six communities, including Indianapolis, offer up to $19,849 in incentives that vary from cash to golf passes, wellness stipends, and entertainment bonuses.
And for professionals drawn to the Northeast, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, will help foot moving costs and provide newcomers with family-friendly discounts and co-working space memberships.
Another study earlier this year also highlighted West Virginia’s Ascend program among the best for remote workers employed with companies outside the state. That package includes a $12,000 cash bonus, outdoor gear, and a co-working space membership, among other benefits.
