With minimal startup expenses, strong demand, and room to scale, these side hustle ideas offer a path from extra cash to a full-time business.
Side hustle businesses often require some sort of investment on your part. Whether it’s tools of the trade, subscriptions or manufacturing costs, you often have to spend a little to earn more. But the returns on those investments can vary wildly. The trick is to find a side hustle whose margins are considerably higher than your expenses.
These, typically, are side hustles that have relatively low ongoing costs once you have them established. Overhead is minimal, and there’s generally very little (if any) physical inventory. The biggest recurring investment you’ll have to make is your time. With luck and hard work, your earning potential will continue to grow, perhaps to the point where you might consider converting your side hustle into a full-time small business.
Here are several side hustle businesses that have low startup costs and good margins for founders.
Tutoring
Whether you’re a teacher, speak a second language, or have specific business skills, there are people who will find that knowledge valuable. Potential customer bases range from school kids who are struggling with core classes to founders looking to learn more about specific business skills (such as HR, management or expansion planning).
The e-learning market reached $314 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow to $615 billion by 2029. Sites like Wyzant can be a helpful resource for finding clients. If you find demand for your tutoring continues to grow, you could consider creating a cottage business around it, with online lessons you can sell on sites like Skillshare or Udemy.
Personal training and fitness coaching
If you’re already a fitness enthusiast, you likely have many of the tools you’ll need to help others get into shape. You may, however, want to get professionally credentialed from programs like Nesta or the Spencer Institute before you market yourself to potential clients, as this can help establish credibility.
From there, it’s a matter of marketing. Personal trainers charge an average of $40 to $70 per hour nationwide, according to GoodRx. That figure can go higher, though, if you conduct an in-person training session at your client’s home. Group sessions carry lower per hour costs, but you’ll be paid by multiple people, which increases your total.
If the side hustle takes off, it could lead to a full-time training business or launching your own boutique gym. The boutique fitness market is growing fast, and expected to reach just under $13 billion by 2032, according to global market research and business intelligence firm Metastat Insight.
Operating with an eye on niche markets could prove to be even more lucrative, it adds.
“The USA boutique fitness market will … experience diversification,” Metastat writes. “Studios will be addressing underrepresented communities, gender-neutral communities, and age-specific programs, thereby increasing inclusivity. … Micro-level customization will further cement loyalty and emotional bonding.”
Pressure washing
The chief start-up cost for this side hustle business is the investment in a high-quality pressure washer. That speeds up the time it takes you to clean a patio, a driveway, or other surface. The average price to pressure wash a house is around $300, though that can more than double depending on the size of the home and other factors (location, condition, etc.).
Once you’ve secured residential customers (Facebook and Nextdoor are particularly good places to start), establishing relationships with commercial businesses is a good route to expand the side hustle into a full-time business.
Car detailing
This is a side hustle business that lets customers reclaim their time. And the cost to entry in the field is low, largely consisting of buckets, soap, sponges, rags, and other cleaning products.
Car detailing is a field that has significant financial protentional, as well. A forecast by Future Market Insights predicts the global market for mobile car wash services will grow to just under $283 billion by 2035. That’s more than double the $126 billion the businesses were expected to bring in last year.
Your margins will depend, partly, upon the density of competition in your local market, but national averages range from $40 for a basic wash to more than $350 for a full detail. You can charge the upper end of that range (or more) by traveling to your customers’ home or office to do the work.
SEO and AIO services
Few small businesses have the time to do a deep audit of their website to boost their ranking on search results pages and artificial intelligence summaries. If you’re adept at keeping up with Google’s changing rules and/or have a good command of AI, this can be a side hustle with low overhead, and high returns.
In addition to search, many businesses are also increasingly looking for steps they can take to get found via AI chatbots, like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. (Which is known as GEO, AEO, or AIO.)
A standard retainer for this work is between $1,500 and $5,000 per month, depending on the size of the client’s company and the amount of work to be done. And at least one market forecast predicts the market size of the SEO optimization field will basically double to $135 billion by 2035.
