Another brand-new The Wheel of Timestory is on its way, this time in one of the least expected forms of all.
Indie game studio Dire Wolf has officially obliterated its original Kickstarter goal for the upcoming War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time board game, the very first based on Robert Jordan's iconic fantasy series. While the Kickstarter, which amassed more than $1.1 million against an initial goal of only $50,000, ended back in June, fans will likely still be able to get their own copy of the game when it arrives next year, especially when considering the more than $43,000 per day that the crowdfunding campaign generated on averaged.
War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time Is Unlike Anything the Franchise Has Ever Seen
War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time is designed by Andy Clautice, Mike Mihealsick, and Ryan Schoon, with concept art and character designs by Raul Ramos. The game is described as a "grand strategy board game" that gives players command of the forces and light and darkness alike in order to "wage war across a land of magic, ancient prophecies, and powerful armies set to save the world... or destroy it."
The game features tableau building, action selection, and area control mechanics that give players the chance to establish control over various corners of the map across two separate game modes. These include a Hero Mode, which Dire Wolf recommends for new players and focuses on smaller scale encounters between the forces of The Dragon and The Dark One, as well as Epic Mode, which gives players control of entire armies.
The official game description notes that "Both game modes span the two years from The Battle of Tow Rivers depicted in The Shadow Rising to the end of the Third Age. Hero Mode includes the preparations for The Last Battle, while Epic MOde brings the entire cataclysmic confrontation right to your tabletop."
Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series began in 1990 with the release of The Eye of the World, the first in what is now a series of fifteen novels, not to mention numerous short stories and comics. While Jordan tragically passed away in 2007, the creator's extensive notes allowed for fellow critically acclaimed fantasy author Brandon Sanderson to complete the final entry in the series, which itself became a trio of novels in the forms of The Gathering Storm, Towers of Midnight, and A Memory of Light, released from 2009 to 2013.
The Wheel of Time has previously been adapted for a variety of mediums, including a three-season live-action streaming series from Prime Video, which was ultimately canceled in 2025. Fortunately, fans can look forward to yet another television adaptation courtesy of the upcoming The Wheel of Time universe of animated films, series, and video games courtesy of iwot Studios, who will be partnering with Arcane's Thomas Wu and Initiate Entertainment on the projects.
