Everywhere I look, someone is trying to convince me that the product they’re selling is something I need. Such is the case for the Berry Chantilly Cake from Whole Foods. This dessert has found viral success on TikTok, where there are countless videos of shoppers trying the cake for a captive audience. You would be correct to question if the hype is real. It’s a grocery store cake after all. How good can it be?
Well, I’m here to tell you that they’re right.
Let me start by saying, I love to bake! I used to do it professionally, in fact. So I do know “good cake” when I taste it, and babe, this is it. The vanilla cake layers are as light and delicate as the name Chantilly would suggest. They’re stacked with juicy blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries too. And the frosting is not an afterthought. An almond-scented mascarpone cream as airy as a mousse, it lends the perfect tartness to the ripe fruit.
An original fan, if I do say so myself, I’ve loved this cake for years, long before its internet fame. I’ve brought it to Fourth of July parties as a patriotic dessert, and after a bad day, I’ll seek comfort in a single slice (which they package and sell in addition to whole cakes). And last year, after my city hall nuptials, it was my wedding cake at a small celebration at home, plated on a family heirloom gifted to me by my dad.
I’ve come across adaptations of the store’s iconic dessert, and maybe one day I’ll give a homemade rendition a try. This cake recipe would make a fun starting point. But for now, when a craving strikes, I’m taking a stroll, buying a slice, and calling it a day. With a summer this hot, I’m more than happy to leave my oven off.
