After its unexpected return this summer, The Rookie's new release is a cautionary tale for its upcoming run. The 2025-2026 TV season was consequential for Alexi Hawley-created procedural in a lot of ways. For starters, it broke barriers with its bold opener set in Prague, as international filming for network shows is almost unheard of. When John Nolan and his overseas team got back, a slew of changes was waiting for them in Mid-Wilshire, including Tim Bradford becoming the new Watch Commander.
Throughout the year,The Rookie season 8's crew was subjected to all kinds of challenges. Some of them were on the job, including a few truly bizarre cases, and others were personal, such as Wesley Evers' final rendezvous with Monica Stevens. Overall, it did well, as it maintained its place as one of the most-watched shows on ABC's portfolio. That said, it wasn't without flaws, and one of them is on full display in The Rookie season 8's newly-released extended cut on Hulu.
The Rookie Season 8, Episode 10's Extended Cut Makes It So Much Better
As promised, a new cut of The Rookie season 8, episode 10, "His Name Was Martin," is now streaming on Hulu, which features additional scenes from the broadcast version. The updated version includes five-and-a-half minutes of never-before-seen footage that mainly focuses on more character interactions among the Mid-Wilshire group. "His Name Was Martin" is one of the most grueling episodes of The Rookie season 8, as it deals with hoards of detox personnel. It has a longer dialog between Wade Grey and Bailey Nune, as well as fresh
Interactions between Nyla Harper and Miles Penn. The latest version also features a romantic but ominous scene with Bradford and Lucy Chen.
What The Rookie season 8, episode 10's extended cut highlights how vital it is for the show to efficiently use its runtime. As compelling as the outing is, one of its biggest criticisms after its original broadcast was how distracting Dash's involvement was. At that point, Beckett Hawley had appeared in the series a few times, mainly as a tertiary character. While it's always great to have fun side roles to shake things up, "His Name Was Martin's" network TV version could have included all of these significant interactions between the main players had the episode focused solely on them and their reaction to the grueling call. The Rookie season 9 needs to absolutely consider this as the series goes on.
The Rookie Season 9 Needs To Focus On Its Main Characters
Like the majority of successful procedurals, The Rookie's backbone is its characters. Hawley built an ensemble with unique players. Some will, understandably, have more screen time, such as Nolan, Bradford, and Chen, among others, but the idea has always been to give everyone their own personal arcs. Unfortunately, The Rookie season 8 occasionally failed to do this, as evidenced by the lack of individual arcs for Celina Juarez and the odd disappearance of Penn. Moving forward, this needs to change, as it's intrinsic to the show's longevity that it continues to develop its characters, especially the new ones.
This doesn't mean that The Rookie can't bring back their recurring guest stars; it absolutely still should. However, it shouldn't be at the expense of the main characters of the procedural. As Celina settles into her new role and Penn graduates from being a rookie, they need to have more visibility, as they might eventually become the next faces of the story as it progresses, opening the possibility of veteran cast exits. The same goes for other players who have been in The Rookie for a little while now, like Harper and even Wesley Evers.
