The Rookiefans will have to wait a bit longer for Season 9 to return with new episodes, but the ABC series did surprise them with a new cut of The Rookie Season 8, Episode 10, "His Name Was Martin." The extended edition of the finale fixes what showrunner Alexi Hawley considers to be a botched moment in a big way.
The extended cut of The Rookie Season 8, Episode 10, "His Name Was Martin," offers a new take on one of the show's most suspenseful moments. It also adds new context ot an important emotional scene. "I do think that those extra five or six minutes really lets the episode breathe in a way that just feels different," Hawley told TV Line.
The Rookie Fixes Its "Zombie" Scene
The biggest upgrade in The Rookie Season 8, Episode 10, is a recut version of the scene in which Harper finds a body, investigates, and is attacked by a person behaving in a zombie-like way. The scene came off as somewhat rushed in the broadcast version of the episode. However, the new version on Hulu allows the scene to breathe, building tension by showing Harper and the victim's body from multiple angles before the "zombie" attacks.
"The one moment that I tweaked, which is better in the extended cut, is when Harper finds the body outside the building that she ends up hiding in," Hawley says. "The tension of waiting with that blackness of the doorway and everything — I didn't crack it for the network cut. It works now in the extended cut."
The Rookie Extended Episode Includes an Important Tim and Lucy Moment
The extended cut also restores a previously deleted scene that's important to the relationship between Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford. In the scene, Tim tells Lucy and Celina that he has bad feelings about the day. He offers to ride with Lucy, but Lucy and Celina laugh him off.
"I thought that was the hardest [scene] to cut," Hawley says. "I really did think that it set up what was to come, the foreboding of it a little bit."
The Rookie Season 3 Starts Shooting Soon
"One of the many fun things about making The Rookie is that we have such a broad playground story and tone-wise," Hawley previously explained of the decision to release an extended cut of the episode. "For 810, I knew I wanted to make something fun and scary and unexpectedly emotional. But tension takes time to play out on screen, and I found myself in the editing room with hard choices to make. I can count the number of scenes we’ve dropped in eight seasons on one hand (maybe two?), but I was up against a wall on this one."
In more good news for The Rookie fans, production on The Rookie Season 9 is set to kick off on Tuesday. The Rookie, including the extended cut of "His Name Was Martin," is streaming now on Hulu.
