At just 24 years old, Simone Johnson-known to WWE fans as Ava Raine-has decided to walk away from the family business, choosing to forge her own identity rather than continue down a path paved by three generations before her.

On January 30, Ava Raine took to Instagram to share news that caught many by surprise.

"This past Tuesday was my last appearance on NXT & subsequently WWE," she wrote in the post. "Thank you to all who have cheered, watched, and supported me through my journey."

"While my decision to not renew my contract was very difficult, it's also new turning point in my life. It has been an honor & a privilege to be Ava," she added in the post.

For nearly five years, Simone Johnson inhabited the character of Ava Raine. Now, she's stepping back into her own name, her own story, and her own future.

Ava Raine's departure marks the end of a historic run

To appreciate the significance of this decision, it helps to understand just how deep the Johnson family roots run in professional wrestling. 

When Simone Johnson signed with WWE in February 2020, per ESPN, she didn't just join a company-she became the first fourth-generation wrestler in WWE history.

That's a legacy that stretches back decades. 

Her great-grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, was a legendary figure in the wrestling world. Her grandfather, Rocky Johnson, built on that foundation and became a star in his own right.

And then there's her father-Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson-who transcended the sport entirely to become one of the most recognizable and beloved entertainers on the planet.

Ava's decision came without warning to fans

What makes Ava Raine's departure particularly noteworthy is that she wasn't struggling. By all accounts, her WWE career was on an upward trajectory.

She made her TV debut on October 25, 2022, per the WWE, when she was revealed as the fourth member of the faction The Schism, led by Joe Gacy. 

Her in-ring debut took place at the NXT Stand & Deliver premium live event on April 1, 2023, per the Daily Mail.

By Jan. 23, 2024, at just 22 years old, she was named General Manager of NXT-making her the youngest GM in WWE history, per the WWE.

Think about that for a moment: at an age when many young adults are still figuring out their first jobs, Simone Johnson had already made history in her family's industry. She had proven she could succeed. 

And yet, she still chose to leave.

Simone Johnson doesn't owe anyone an explanation for her next chapter. What we do know is that she's leaving on her own terms, with gratitude for the experience and excitement for what lies ahead.

The news of her departure comes less than two months after she confirmed her relationship with fellow NXT star Tatyanna Dumas.
