The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 will finally introduce a major The Lord of the Rings character who has been conspicuously missing from the series thus far. Stranger Things alum Jamie Campbell Bower is officially playing Celeborn in The Rings of Power.
Celeborn is the husband of Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), who will go on to rule Lothlorien in The Third Age of Middle-earth (as seen in Peter Jackson's movies, in which Marton Csokas played Celeborn and Cate Blanchett played Galadriel). Celeborn is considered one of the wisest of all the elves in Middle-earth.
Celeborn Finally Arrives in The Rings of Power Season 3
Celeborn's absence from The Rings of Power's first two seasons did not go unnoticed by fans. The idea that he went missing and that Galadriel believed him dead is a contrivance created entirely for The Rings of Power, with some fans feeling it was meant to allow for romantic tension between Galadriel and Halbrand (later revealed to be Sauron) and even potentially Elrond (her future son-in-law) without veering into adulterous territory.
Regardless, it seems Celeborn will be recovered in The Rings of Power's third season. Bower gave Empire a hint of what to expect between Celeborn and Galadriel once the couple reunites.
"This idea of longing and yearning is so pervasive in Tolkien’s relationship with Edith for the time that they were apart,” Bower said. “I really feasted on that idea. Celeborn has had to find a way to survive whilst longing for something that he so dearly loved and so dearly missed as well.”
Clark adds, “She’s kind of rude to him in the books. She’s the queen! But Jamie looks exactly like how I would imagine Celeborn. He’s such an Elf.”
Celeborn Returns When His People Need Him Most
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a pretty good time for Celeborn to return. The new seasons will jump ahead a few years (and mess with Tolkien's Middle-earth timeline a bit) to bring viewers to the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, in which Sauron wages war against the Elves to try to reclaim the Three Rings.
And yes, we mean Sauron. Not Halbrand, or Annatar: Sauron. The Ring of Power star Charlie Vickers will be playing the villain in all of his menacing glory, now using force of will and power ot strike his enemies rather than cunning, guile, deception, and trickery. That also means The Rings of Power Season 3 will show the forging of The One Ring.
Prime Video's synopsis for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 confirms the new seasons s set several years after Season 2, and takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war, bind all peoples to his will – and at last rule all Middle-earth.
