The Odyssey breaks a major record for Christopher Nolan.

The Odyssey is an action-fantasy film adaptation written, directed, and produced by Nolan. The movie is inspired by Homer's classic Greek epic story. The Odyssey also features a star-studded ensemble cast which consists of Matt Damon (Odysseus), Tom Holland (Telemachus), Anne Hathaway (Penelope), Robert Pattinson (Antinous), Lupita Nyong'o (Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra), Samantha Morton (Circe), John Leguizamo (Eumaeus), Zendaya (Athena), Jon Bernthal (Menelaus), and Charlize Theron (Calypso).

Nolan has reached another milestone in his impressive career. The Odyssey officially delivered the highest Tuesday box office earnings for any of Nolan's projects, surpassing the long-standing record previously held by The Dark Knight. According to the latest box office figures at the time of this article's publication, The Odyssey grossed $21,498,195 on Tuesday, July 21, outdoing the latter's $20.8 million.

The achievement just reinforces the director's ability to draw in large audiences to anything that has his name on it. These numbers also almost guarantee that The Odyssey will have an extended theatrical run. The film has already made back more than $100 million of its budget in a matter of days.

The title was held for the past 18 years by the Batman film, The Dark Knight. The critically acclaimed movie arguably redefined the superhero and comic book adaptation genres. The project took one of the most iconic comic book characters of all time and put a spin on not just Bruce Wayne's story but also that of the hero's most recognizable villains, the Joker.

Similar to The Odyssey, The Dark Knight also had a huge ensemble cast. The movie starred Christian Bale (Batman), Michael Caine (Alfred Pennyworth), Heath Ledger (the Joker), Gary Oldman (James Gordon), Aaron Eckhart (Two-Face), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Rachel Dawes), and Morgan Freeman (Lucius Fox).

While The Odyssey made more than The Dark Knight on a Tuesday, it remains to be seen if it will also beat the latter's box office total. The Batman adaptation grossed $1.009 billion overall on a $185 million budget. Only time will tell if The Odyssey will truly outperform The Dark Knight or if the current numbers are the result of the hype surrounding the film within its opening week.

The Odyssey is currently playing in theaters.
