It’s a classic for a reason.

It’s a classic for a reason.

When it comes to choosing a pedicure color, as much as seasonality is a big factor—neon coral for January and vampy purple for May just don’t feel quite right—the most popular choices remain the tried-and-true staples. After all, you’re committing to a color for as long as you manage to make it between pedicure appointments, which for some can translate to “as long as possible.” And during sandal season, it’s going to be on full display.

While neutrals have remained a go-to option for summer pedicures, we’re seeing something much more interesting—and classic enough to be grandma-approved—being donned on toes this year. Red nails aren’t only trending for manicures, but for your pedis too.

What Makes Red the Ultimate Pedicure Color

Nothing will ever compare to the easy confidence and effortless style that three coats of OPI Big Apple Red instantly give—and if you’re going to have your toes out, you certainly need it. Just like when donning a classic red mani, red toes give off an inherent boldness, while still being feminine and flattering. It’s the most iconic nail color for a reason, and your Southern grandma undoubtedly had her own go-to bottle at home.

In my opinion, red nails go with any outfit, because they have remained so classic for so many decades that they should practically be considered a neutral—except choosing red is way more interesting that going with white or nude for your toes, as those shades tend to lose shine and appear dowdy in just days.

Red is versatile for every season, skin tone, and style; so you can choose accordingly. Here is what to consider.

Consider the Season

Since red is the ultimate pedicure pick for summer, feel free to go with something that feels more vibrant or summery, such as OPI’s iconic pinky orange-red Cajun Shrimp. If you want a classic shade that, without fail, has me raking in more compliments than any other, go with OPI Big Apple Red. It still feels perfect for warmer months.

Choose for Your Tone

There really are no rules when it comes to choosing a summer pedicure color, as long as you like it. However, warm skin tones can veer on the more coral side of the red spectrum, while cool skin tones might find blue-toned reds more flattering. If you’re unsure, ask the nail technician, who likely knows the difference and can make a recommendation.

Feel Free to Go Dark

Dark red is still an enticing option for summer, but stick to more vibrant berry reds or a juicy wine red such as OPI’s popular pearlescent I’m Not Really A Waitress, which many of our readers cited as their favorite pedicure color of all time.

Summer should be for having fun, from your fingers to your toes—and red is just that.
