Popular smartwatch and tracker brand Garmin is getting into the distraction-free fitness tracker game with the official release of the Garmin CIRQA Smart Band, a new tracker that comes without the display and without the worry of being beholden to your wrist-worn wearable of choice. Since they became available several years ago, fitness trackers have largely come with displays just like smartwatches.
What companies like Garmin, now with the CIRQA Smart Band, and companies like Google with the Fitbit Air and Whoop with its own smart band are trying to correct, is a sort of necessity to always look down and check the wearable. Garmin says the CIRQA Smart Band was designed to help users break free from this practice, by “helping users make improvements toward a healthier lifestyle without commanding all their attention.” The “inconspicuous design” of the tracker aims to help users track important health data without feeling the need to interact with it several times a day.
The CIRQA offers up to 10 days of battery life, which is slightly longer than you might get with something like a Fitbit Charge 6 that has a display and would typically last for up to 7 days.
The Garmin CIRQA Smart Band doesn’t require a subscription
One of the main things that defines the Whoop tracker is that it requires a subscription to buy it. You buy the membership, and the tracker comes for free with it. Memberships start about $199 for the latest tracker, the Whoop 5.0. Google’s Fitbit Air, meanwhile, is $99, but offers the $99 Google Health plan as an optional thing you can pay for if you want more advanced metrics and other features.
The Garmin CIRQA is different in that it doesn’t require a subscription, but it is double the price of the Fitbit Air, with Garmin setting the retail price at $199. Garmin stresses that the CIRQA band is capable of delivering a robust set of health-tracking features that are all accessible at no extra cost. This includes manual activity tracking of more than 80 different activities, connected GPS, and LiveTrack location sharing just to name a few. The CIRQA can also be worn as an arm band if you don’t want to wear it on your wrist. The fabric bands for the Garmin CIRQA come in several colors that include Mauve, French Gray, Black, Citron Gray, Dark Olive, Captain Blue, and French Blue. It goes up for sale on July 24 for $199.
