The e-reader that fits on the back of your phone just got a huge upgrade

The Xteink X4 Pro comes with one huge new feature

The Xteink X4, best known as the pocket-sized e-reader that can magnetically attach to your phone, is getting an Pro version with a much-needed upgrade that fixes its biggest flaw.

We don't know much about the Xteink X4 Pro, but judging by the email sent out by Xteink, a lot of what we loved about the previous versions will be retained. The new feature that earns the Pro name? None other than a front light.

This may seem like a small change if you're not used to such cheap and small devices — but based on personal experience, I know this makes the Pro an upgrade worthy of a day one purchase.

A big upgrade for a small device

The Xteink X4 became something of a cult hit

. If you haven't come across it before, it's a very small e-reader that can fit in your pocket, and comes with MagSafe magnets .

It's small, cheap, and pretty good at what it does. It does, obviously, have a few flaws, but most of those could be fixed by

.

One which couldn't be fixed, however, rested in the hardware. While the e-ink display was excellent for reading in lit conditions, the lack of a front light meant the device couldn't be used in dimmer lighting, or in bed without a lamp. People loved it, and it started

.

This meant that while the Xteink X4 was an excellent travel companion, it could never really replace a larger e-reader with a front light. Now, thanks to a front light, the X4 Pro can be much more than the standard X4.

A lot is still unknown, but don't expect much more to change

We don't know much more about the Xteink X4 Pro than what's included in the promotional image above. From what we can tell, the size of the device seems larger unchanged. That's to be expected, as the size of the device was the entire draw of it.

It's also likely the specs won't change too much either, as an e-reader doesn't require big processing numbers or large amounts of RAM. It's possible there will be a bump in the amount of storage offered, but given the current price rises for components, that's not guaranteed, or even hinted at.

The price is likely to be higher than the X4, but don't expect the X4 Pro to be very expensive. The standard X4 was available for $69, and the X4 Pro probably won't be too much more.

We won't have long to find out all the details. Xteink has included a countdown in the email, and the Xteink X4 Pro will launch at 7AM PST (10AM EST) on July 21.
