Marvel released the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer this morning, days ahead of its expected Comic-Con debut. It brings back a worthy Steve Rogers, an overpowered Doctor Doom — and it matches the beat-by-beat leaks the studio spent months scrubbing off the internet.

After months of playing keep-away, Marvel Studios blinked. The first official Avengers: Doomsday trailer arrived online this morning, well ahead of the July 25 San Diego Comic-Con panel where everyone expected it to premiere. And the biggest takeaway isn’t a surprise — it’s that there were barely any surprises left, because the leakers already spoiled all of it.

Here’s what dropped, and why it’s a small humiliation for Marvel’s anti-leak operation.

What the trailer actually shows

The trailer is a multiverse rallying cry. Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor is trying to gather heroes from across realities to face the threat of Doctor Doom — and he already knows they’re outmatched. The trailer shows Doom neutralizing the God of Thunder with almost no effort, framing him as someone Thor fears more than Thanos ever was.

The emotional beat is the return fans clocked back in December: Chris Evans is back as Steve Rogers, and he’s still worthy — the trailer shows him summoning Mjolnir. Notably, though, he may not be Captain America this time. Anthony Mackie‘s Sam Wilson is still carrying the shield in the footage, so Steve’s role is deliberately left ambiguous.

And Robert Downey Jr. anchors the whole thing as Victor Von Doom — not Tony Stark. After a brief tease in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the trailer firmly establishes Doom as the film’s central, overwhelming threat, with the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and the Thunderbolts-turned-New-Avengers all pulled into his orbit.

It confirms the leaks Marvel tried to bury

Now the embarrassing part for Marvel.

For the past two months, Doomsday has leaked like a sieve. A blurry battle sequence surfaced in June, followed by high-quality stills of Doom and the X-Men, and Disney fired off DMCA takedowns to yank the footage down — a move that, ironically, all but confirmed the leaks were real.

Then, roughly a week ago, a full beat-by-beat description of this very trailer appeared, translated from a Russian Telegram channel via Reddit and amplified by scooper MyTimeToShineHello. It came stamped with every “unverified, rough cut, treat with caution” caveat in the book.

It was accurate. The official trailer lines up with that leaked description almost shot for shot, including Steve reuniting with a disbelieving Thor and settling it by calling Mjolnir to his hand, Thor hurling Stormbreaker at Doom only for the villain to stop it with a flick of his wrist, etc.

That’s the story here as much as any hero moment. Marvel skipped the Super Bowl, skipped attaching the trailer to The Mandalorian and Grogu, and guarded the CinemaCon footage like a state secret — all to control this reveal. The internet reverse-engineered it anyway.

Steve Rogers is back — but the shield question lingers

The Evans return isn’t new information, but the trailer sharpens the mystery around it. Steve settled down with Peggy Carter at the end of Endgame and handed the shield to Sam. His reappearance here — worthy of Mjolnir, but with Sam still holding the shield — signals Marvel is bringing back the man without automatically bringing back the mantle. Whatever Steve is in this movie, “Captain America” isn’t confirmed.

What’s still coming at Comic-Con

The early drop doesn’t cancel Comic-Con — it front-loads it. Marvel still has its Hall H panel on July 25, where the studio is expected to trot out the cast, the Russo brothers, and likely a few reveals it actually managed to keep off the internet. If any exist.

Marvel fought the leaks for months and effectively lost, releasing a trailer that its own audience had already storyboarded from memory. Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters December 18, 2026. The leakers, apparently, saw it first.
