The 2027 Toyota Tundra takes a leaf out of the Tacoma's book with a new Trailhunter package

  • The 2027 Toyota Tundra adds a Trailhunter package that's full of off-roading upgrades, and the entire lineup gets a facelift and upgraded tech.
  • The Trailhunter kit includes bronze wheels, reinforced underbody protection, front recovery hooks, a locking rear differential, terrain controls, bigger tires, and an upgraded suspension.
  • Toyota says pricing details for the '27 Tundra lineup, as well as the Trailhunter package, will be announced later this year.

The Toyota Tundra is getting burlier than ever, first with hints of a future TRD Hammer variant and now with the slightly less intense Trailhunter package. While it might not be able to take you to every corner of the world, Toyota says the new 2027 Tundra Trailhunter is an attainable way to get a full-size pickup truck with off-road-ready hardware.

The Trailhunter builds on the Tundra's SR5 trim, which sits just above the entry-level SR. The SR5 has more desirable standard equipment than the base model, such as alloy wheels, a trailer-brake controller, and a Tow/Haul drive mode. The Tundra's even fancier trims may have even better features and sharper styling, but the SR5 gets the job done in a practical and relatively affordable manner.

Adding the Trailhunter package to the Tundra will tack on Michelin LTX Trail 265/70R-18 tires, an Old Man Emu suspension kit, front recovery hooks, more underbody protection, and a locking rear differential for better traction in off-road conditions. Also included are Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control modes, which allow more control in a variety of environments.

Since Toyota said the Trailhunter is based on the SR5 model, it should have that truck's standard nonhybrid powertrain, which includes a 389-hp twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6—assuming the engine doesn't get any updates for the 2027 model year. For those who opt for the hybrid version, they'll get more power but will likely miss out on the Trailhunter treatment.

On the outside, the Tundra Trailhunter shares features with the rest of the refreshed 2027 lineup, where most of the makeover appears up front. The grille is boxier than older models, and the lower bumper is more defined and square. The Trailhunter package adds bronze wheels and badges scattered across the interior and exterior.

The Tundra's interior remains largely unchanged for 2027, but a 14.0-inch touchscreen is now standard on every model. That display will run an updated infotainment system that now includes a built-in dash cam, and the trucks will be equipped with updated safety features. The Tundra's available front light bar is also brighter for higher visibility on dark roads and trails.

More specific details and pricing for the 2027 Toyota Tundra are expected to be released later this year. The 2026 Tundra SR5 started at $48,705, so we're expecting the 2027 version with the Trailhunter package to surpass $50,000.
