A new monument honoring America’s military service members is set to be installed this month in front of the Lincoln Memorial, and will consist of two screens displaying the names of more than 41 million people who have served this country.
The monument, sponsored by the United Services Automobile Association (USAA) and timed to honor America’s 250th birthday, will stand between the Lincoln Memorial and the Reflecting Pool from July 28 through August 23.
Although there is no single comprehensive record of all military members who have ever served, “USAA has combined multiple public records and data sources to commemorate as many service members as possible honoring and remembering their commitment,” the monument’s website reads.
Interactive kiosks along the monument allow visitors to look up and locate the names of family members who have served. Current military members are generally not listed, as their records are not yet public.
The monument features two screens made to look like American flags and was designed by Atomic Design in Lititz, Pennsylvania, where people gathered to publicly send off the monument as it was delivered to DC.
The new installation is one of several upcoming monuments seeking to honor America’s service members. The Desert Shield and Desert Storm Memorial to celebrate those who served in the 1990-91 Gulf War is currently under construction, and the Global War on Terror Memorial is set to open in 2028.
