Supernatural '80s cult classic officially gets new release 38 years later

The '80s were truly a wild time for kids' movies. A number of up-and-coming filmmakers were pushing boundaries of what was appropriate for audiences of all ages, but funny enough, Steven Spielberg is almost single-handedly to blame for the creation of the PG-13 rating. In 1984, he directed Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and produced Gremlins. Both of these movies featured unexpected violence and intensity that were ultimately deemed too graphic for children under 13, resulting in the MPA creating the new PG-13 rating.

Even with this new rating, this didn't stop young audiences from witnessing terrors that may have been too intense for them. From Watcher in the Woods to Something Wicked This Way Comes to The NeverEnding Story, the '80s gave us a number of movies that may have seemed somewhat tame to older audiences but fully freaked out kids. Another example of a story far more conceptually unsettling than what it initially appeared to be is 1988's Lady in White.

Starring a young Lukas Haas, the movie blends together the supernatural with a genuine murder mystery. To celebrate the traumatizing movie, Vinegar Syndrome is releasing an all-new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray that's jam-packed with special features.

The boutique label describes the movie:

1962. Nine-year-old Frankie Scarlatti enjoys a homespun childhood in a rustic Western New York town. The entire community gets into the spirit of Halloween, but then two bullies prank Frankie by locking him in his school cloakroom, leaving him trapped for the night. Alone and afraid, his slumber is interrupted when the ghost of a little girl appears, and Frankie witnesses the specter of her murder by an unseen assailant. Later, while recovering at home, the girl's ghost appears to him again. With help from his older brother, Frankie begins investigating the circumstances of her death. He soon discovers that her murder was one of several unsolved crimes connected to a local child-killer. As the town's bucolic veneer fades and long-buried secrets and tensions bubble to the surface, all of the clues to the mystery seem to point towards a huge mansion inhabited by a reclusive woman known as "The Lady in White."
