Last summer, director James Gunn relaunched the DC Cinematic Universe with Superman, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. That movie included a cameo from Superman's cousin Supergirl, played by House of the Dragon veteran Milly Alcock. This past June, Supergirl got her own movie, but it hasn't proven nearly as successful as its predecessor. On its opening weekend, Supergirlearned less money than Toy Story 5 at the box office, which already been in theaters for a week. Going into its third weekend, Supergirl was on track to have the worst box office performance for any DC movie since 2004's Catwoman.
And the bad news just keeps coming. According to Comic Book Movie, Supergirl has earned just $1.4 million from the domestic box office over its fourth weekend in theaters, dropping 62% from its third frame. That's the worst performance over a fourth weekend for any movie in the DC Cinematic Universe, both Gunn's reboot and the earlier version launched by Zack Snyder with 2013's Man of Steel. Before Supergirl, this dubious honor was held by 2023's Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which grossed $1.6 million over its fourth weekend.
At present, Supergirl has earned $121.1 million worldwide. In contrast, Superman earned $125 million on its opening weekend just from the domestic box office, and went on to earn $618.7 million worldwide. Supergirl will be available to rent or buy digitally on July 28, at which point people will have even less reason to see it in theaters. As things stand, Supergirl may not make as much money from the global box office as Superman did on its opening weekend just from theaters in the United States and Canada.
Supergirl needed to make between $340 and $350 million at the box office to be profitable for Warner Bros. Discovery. Although it could recoup some of its costs through digital sales, it's clearly a theatrical failure.
Supergirl is set to return in Man of Tomorrow, a new Superman movie due out in theaters on July 9, 2027. According to DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran, the failure of Supergirl will not change the overall strategy for the DCU going forward. "While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in," he said.
The next movie in the DCU is Clayface, a horror film about the long-time Batman villain. It's due out on October 23, 2026. We'll see if people are more interested in thatthan Supergirl. Meanwhile, although Supergirl faltered, the summer box office is still doing very well thanks in part to the arrival of The Odyssey, which is setting records.
