Store closure plan raises town centre post office concerns

TG Jones plans to close its site on Fort William High Street which currently hosts the branch.

Concerns have been raised about the future of the post office on Fort William High Street and the shop in which it is located, which is set to close.

The Post Office is situated within a TG Jones branch (formerly WH Smith), and the company plans to close it as part of a business restructuring.

A closure date has not yet been confirmed, but it has thrown the future of in-person postal services in the area into question.

The Post Office said it was actively looking for a replacement operator for the branch.

Scottish Lib Dem MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch, Andrew Baxter, said he feared there was a very real possibility the Fort William High Street branch could be lost entirely.

The former postmaster said there had been concerns about the branch for some time as it was already operating with restricted hours and, as he understood, they were struggling to recruit staff.

However, Mr Baxter said: "I am aware of the possibility of two organisations that are interested in maybe taking over the post office, and I will be pursuing those."

A spokesperson for the Post Office said that it was advertising online for someone else to run and host the Fort William branch and that, in the meantime, customers could use the Corpach and Spean Bridge branches.

Billionaire Jeff Bezos called Amazon’s customer service to prove a point but waited in silence for more than 10 minutes — ‘It was really long’
