The Pittsburgh Steelers head into training camp with most of the attention focused on established veterans and high-profile newcomers. However, one under-the-radar player has quietly positioned himself to compete for a roster spot. Running back Max Hurleman may not be a household name, but his versatility gives him a legitimate chance to emerge as one of Pittsburgh's biggest training camp stories.
Hurleman spent the entire 2025 season developing on the Steelers' practice squad without appearing in a regular-season game. Now 24 years old, he arrives in Latrobe with another opportunity to prove he belongs on the active roster. His value extends well beyond the running back position, something that could work heavily in his favor as roster battles intensify throughout August.
Versatility could become Hurleman's biggest advantage
Hurleman's college resume suggests he can contribute in multiple ways. While at Colgate, he rushed for 814 yards, caught 80 passes, and handled both punt and kickoff return duties. After transferring to Notre Dame, he continued to showcase his special teams value by returning punts and recording 13 tackles on coverage units.
That versatility reportedly stood out during the Steelers' organized team activities. Pittsburgh does not necessarily need Hurleman to outperform established running backs such as Jaylen Warren or Rico Dowdle. Instead, he simply needs to demonstrate enough flexibility to convince the coaching staff he can fill multiple game-day roles while occupying only one roster spot.
Special teams may ultimately determine his future. Hurleman's ability to field punts, return kickoffs, and contribute in coverage gives him several pathways onto the final 53-man roster. NFL teams consistently prioritize players capable of handling multiple special teams responsibilities, especially among reserve offensive players.
Competition remains intense for the final roster spots
The challenge, however, will not be easy. Veterans such as Travis Homer already possess strong reputations on special teams, while players including Lew Nichols, Eli Heidenreich, and Kaden Wetjen are also competing for limited opportunities. Each candidate brings a different skill set, making versatility one of Hurleman's strongest selling points.
His receiving ability could further separate him from other reserve running backs. Hurleman has demonstrated he can catch passes out of the backfield, line up in the slot when necessary, and provide emergency depth at multiple offensive positions. That type of flexibility becomes increasingly valuable under modern NFL roster limits.
The preseason will likely determine whether Hurleman can capitalize on those strengths. A handful of impactful plays—whether through secure punt returns, open-field tackles, or reliable offensive production—could dramatically improve his standing as coaches finalize the roster before Week 1.
Although he entered the organization as a tryout player and has yet to play an NFL snap, Hurleman's development over the past year has positioned him for a legitimate opportunity.
