Spider-Man: Brand New Day looks to be the franchise’s most emotional movie yet. It also runs the risk of ruining one of the biggest decisions Spider-Man: No Way Home chose to make.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously helmed the MCU film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which was released in 2021. The movie will once again be led by Tom Holland as he reprises his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Emmy winner Zendaya and Jacob Batalo are also expected to return for the sequel. They will be joined by cast members Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear), Jon Bernthal, and Tillman, among others.
Brand New Day’s latest trailer highlights the emotional journey that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will go through. However, that journey might end by ruining what made No Way Home as emotionally impactful as it was.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day might end up ruining No Way Home’s huge moment
For those who might not remember, the end of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Peter protect the multiverse by allowing himself to be erased from the memories of everyone he knows. This includes the likes of MJ and Ned, his girlfriend and best friend and one of few people who knew he was Spider-Man. The film closes with Parker visiting MJ’s work, and realizing that he isn’t known by anyone.
It’s a surprising ending for a Spider-Man movie, and leaves Parker in a state he hasn’t been in any of the movies we’ve seen featuring the hero. Brand New Day largely focuses on this, with Parker still dealing with the aftermath of not being remembered by anyone. However, from the looks of the trailers of the movie, it seems like Parker will be interacting with MJ and Ned throughout the movie. The final trailer for the film sees Spider-Man saving MJ from a litany of issues, and even meeting Ned at the very end of it.
While it was always likely that Parker’s Spider-Man would remind MJ and Ned of who he is at some point, doing so in the very next movie feels like it ruins what made No Way Home’s ending so impactful. We haven’t seen much of Spider-Man (or MJ or Ned) since No Way Home, so immediately picking up with Spider-Man interacting with all these people, and potentially even reconciling with them, feels like a payoff we haven’t yet earned. Of course, the movie could pivot away from this, but we’ll have to wait to see.
