Special Operations Command wants tube-launched kamikaze drones fired from the AC-130J Ghostrider

SOCOM is trying to keep the Ghostrider alive in a peer fight by sending expendable autonomous killers into the threat ring before the crew has to enter it.

The AC-130 gunship has spent more than half a century doing something brutally simple: orbit close enough to see the enemy, then tear him apart with direct fire. That formula worked over Vietnam, Panama, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria across the gunship family’s variants.

It works less magnificently when the other side owns modern surface-to-air missiles and fighters backed by electronic warfare. In that neighborhood, a predictable orbit can become a racetrack around a coffin.

U.S. Special Operations Command now wants to change the geometry. Instead of forcing the AC-130J Ghostrider over the killing ground, SOCOM wants it to launch small one-way attack drones that can travel at least 75 nautical miles, loiter near the target, identify what they are looking at, and strike with lethal accuracy.

The war in Ukraine hangs over the requirement without being named. GPS cannot be trusted anymore, cheap expendable systems now carry the risks once handed to crewed aircraft, and weapons bought in handfuls disappear fast when the shooting outlasts the briefing slides.

The Ghostrider was built for permissive wars. Against a peer air-defense network, its traditional orbit becomes a liability. SOCOM is trying to keep a scarce and expensive aircraft relevant by turning it into something its designers never intended: a launch platform and command node that sends the killing forward while the crew stays back.

A Tighter Requirement, and a Clearer Intent

HQ USSOCOM posted a PEO-Fixed Wing sources-sought notice July 17 for Group 1 and Group 2 unmanned aircraft built to fit inside a common launch tube measuring 5.9 inches in diameter and no more than 42 inches long.

The munition must weigh no more than 55 pounds, cruise and loiter between 50 and 100 knots, exceed 100 knots on the attack profile, fly at least 75 nautical miles from launch point to loiter point, and be launchable from altitudes as high as 35,000 feet. White papers are due August 17.

SOCOM’s June request allowed 95-pound weapons and considered external lugs along with tubes. The July notice cuts 40 pounds and makes the tube mandatory. A demonstration is planned on the AC-130J or another special operations aircraft equipped with common launch tubes.

The change narrows the field. SOCOM does not want a vendor arriving with a clever weapon and a suitcase full of proprietary equipment. It wants something that fits the aircraft and speaks the government’s language, bought without marrying the manufacturer.

The Tube Is the Strategy

The AC-130J already includes ten common launch tubes integrated into the aft ramp and door area. SOCOM’s 2026 PEO-Fixed Wing briefing places air-launched loitering munitions and collaborative weapons inside its future strike portfolio.

The hardware socket is already there. The command is shopping for the right robotic cartridge.

SOCOM has already demonstrated ALTIUS-series unmanned aircraft from a common launch tube and a UH-60 Black Hawk. The July notice remains market research rather than a request for proposals, but the launch concept is real, not a PowerPoint fever dream cooked up under fluorescent lights by men with button-down short-sleeved shirts and lanyards.

A standardized tube should reduce aircraft modification and cut dependence on proprietary equipment. Change the payload without rebuilding the house.

The 55-pound ceiling points toward magazine depth. A lighter round leaves the aircraft with more launch options and fewer payload penalties. SOCOM is asking vendors to price quantities of 500, 1,000, and 3,000 units. Those are market-survey figures, not approved buys, but nobody asks for the 3,000-round price because he dreams of buying six.

Mass has returned to military planning because exquisite weapons vanish faster than appropriations committees can replace them. Ukraine has made that lesson impossible to ignore. A weapon that works brilliantly and exists only in small numbers becomes a museum piece once the magazine runs dry.

FANTOM Core Is the Real Weapon

The drone must plug into FANTOM Core, SOCOM’s government-owned mission-autonomy framework, through a machine-to-machine interface or the government’s Battle Management System.

The operational goal is direct tasking from the Ghostrider’s mission system. Crews should not have to nurse another contractor laptop while a proprietary control box demands attention in an already crowded aircraft.

FANTOM Core sits inside the Adaptive Airborne Enterprise, linking expendable autonomous aircraft with resilient communications and common control systems. Government ownership lets SOCOM add competing capabilities without surrendering the architecture to one contractor. The Pentagon keeps the keys to its own truck.

That ownership has consequences far beyond one munition.

A contractor that owns the autonomy stack owns the toll road every later weapon must travel.

A government-owned core reverses the relationship, and vendors compete to plug into the system instead of forcing the system to bend around them.

SOCOM also prefers automatic target recognition in the seeker and wants alternative positioning, navigation, and timing methods. Its strike briefing says there should be “no expectation of GPS” in a near-peer fight.

The munition must keep working when GPS is jammed or spoofed. Industry may offer inertial navigation or terrain matching, with updates from other platforms when the network allows it. The notice does not prescribe the answer. It tells industry that satellite navigation can no longer be treated as oxygen.

Automatic target recognition does not hand a machine unlimited authority to kill. DoD Directive 3000.09 requires appropriate levels of human judgment over force, but it does not require a human to approve every engagement. The unresolved issue is where that judgment enters the process, whether during planning, activation, supervision, or individual strike authorization.

Useful autonomy shortens the kill chain. Bad autonomy can manufacture a catastrophe at machine speed.

What It Gives Operators on the Ground

The ground-force problem is rarely a shortage of targets. It is the time required to kill them.

A team identifies a mobile launcher and sends the request upward. The target moves while fires cells coordinate airspace and headquarters argue over priority. The intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance aircraft that was supposed to watch the area never arrives because somebody higher on the food chain found a more important rectangle on the map.

The time is gone before the control ever arrives.

An organic loitering munition changes that equation. The weapon can move ahead of the assault force, search a route, or hold over a suspected site until the target exposes itself. A drone already tied to the gunship’s mission system removes some of the handoffs that turn a fleeting target into an empty patch of dirt.

Collaborative employment could spread the work across several weapons, with one system locating the target while another arrives with the warhead. SOCOM officials have said integration across platforms is moving too slowly. Operators waiting under fire would probably choose stronger language.

What It Gives the Pentagon

For Washington and the Pentagon, one gunship’s magazine is the smallest part of the story.

Planners are thinking about theater-wide consumption. Precision weapons will be spent quickly in a major war, and the industrial base must produce replacements in thousands rather than ceremonial batches. The July pricing bands show SOCOM testing that question before a contract exists.

GPS denial is also bigger than this aircraft. Every service is wrestling with weapons that must navigate and identify targets after the satellites become unreliable. A munition built around that assumption becomes part of a broader answer, not merely another item on the Ghostrider’s load plan.

The AC-130J already carries 30mm and 105mm guns, along with bombs, glide munitions, Hellfires, and Griffins. Havoc Spear promises long-range stand-off reach. The proposed loitering weapon would give planners something different: a round that can remain near the target, search after launch, and wait for a mobile system to make a mistake.

The Air Force lists 30 AC-130Js in inventory, and AFSOC places the unit cost at $165 million. Pushing an expendable weapon forward gives commanders more ways to use those aircraft without treating the crew and airframe as consumable.

Of course, seventy-five nautical miles will not make a C-130 safe against a sophisticated integrated air-defense system. Whatever this buys, it is not an invisibility cloak assembled by acquisition officers after lunch.

The Ghostrider still faces a hard problem. Its most famous method of attack requires it to remain where a peer enemy can reach it. SOCOM’s answer is to make the aircraft less dependent on the orbit and more valuable as the machine directing what goes beyond it.

The concept lives or dies on whether industry can build the weapon cheap enough, in the numbers a real war would burn through, without leaning on a GPS signal that will not be there.
