Faking a retro PC case is easy enough: Slap a beige faceplate on a modern chassis and add a faux floppy drive, and it looks the part, at least from arm’s length. But in 2026, that PC case also needs the cooling, cable management, and hardware support that today's builders expect—otherwise, it’s just an exercise in nostalgia. In doing all that, SilverStone's $179.99 FLP03 strikes a similar balance to what its larger FLP02 full-ATX predecessor did, shrinking this beige box to a more period-correct MicroATX footprint while preserving current-decade support for a 360mm radiator, a big modern graphics card, and other enthusiast hardware. The result is a well-executed retro-inspired PC case, though you’ll pay 2026 premium pricing for that mid-1990s look. 

Design: More Flexible Than the Beige Suggests

The FLP03 diverges from classic-case proportions in two ways. First, the protruding face isn’t all that effective at disguising the unit’s 8.7-inch width (it looks a little wider than you'd expect), and second, it has no 3.5-inch front-facing bays. The time period its front panel and beige color scheme harkens back to started with 80mm exhaust fans and finished with 92mm ones. SilverStone went bigger on the spinners, shrinking the motherboard space to accommodate a modern top-panel radiator, while maintaining the 120mm exhaust-fan size familiar to today’s builders. Those sops to modern sensibilities are welcome.

The front panel does commit to the retro bit, though. Take, for one, that alphanumeric display; the panel also features a red, rocker-style power button with a keylock, a reset button, and a “turbo” button (which actually kicks up the fans to 100%). The two character-readout LEDs spell out the characters “HH.” Power, drive activity, and turbo-mode LEDs sit above the buttons, but what’s below them seems a bit more important: The jumbo cooling fan (model CC18032L12S) uses its giant 180mm-by-32mm dimensions to push up to 100cfm at 30dbA, according to its maker. That fan might excuse the lack of front 3.5-inch bays—it leaves no room for them.

You may have noticed redundant power and reset buttons on the top panel in our first photo. SilverStone added them as a solution for builders who plan to remove the front bay adapter. While ditching that module (which you’re paying for in the premium price of this case, to be sure) might at first appear shortsighted, doing so opens space behind the front panel for a second 180mm fan or even a second 360mm-format radiator.

Behind the top buttons are two indicator LEDs that, normally, would have been used as power-on and drive-activity indicators, followed by two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports and a Gen 2x2 Type-C port, plus separate headphone and microphone jacks. How classic is that?

The FLP03’s bottom panel is covered in the same kind of mesh as the top is, using the same magnetic strips to hold it in place, here within a recess beneath the power supply and a nearby internal drive cage. I found it easiest to remove the filter for cleaning by first tipping the case on its side.

Though the MicroATX form factor supports a maximum of four PCI Express card slots, the FLP03’s rear panel features five expansion-slot brackets to make room for extra-thick graphics cards. Some motherboard designs align the PCIe x16 slot with the case’s second slot bracket to allow for more component space up top, but the FLP03 has the extra space to put even a super-thick four-slot card into that lower position.

As I noted earlier, fitting a MicroATX motherboard mount into an ATX-sized space left the FLP03’s designers with enough room up top to house a 360mm-format radiator. The radiator can be up to 412mm long and 56mm thick (including fans) above the motherboard. Those who try to mount an even thicker cooler up there will find around 42mm of horizontal clearance between it and the motherboard’s vertical surface. Plan accordingly.

Back in the 1990s, looking at the back of a PC case, a model with a folded-out tab for screwing down your PCIe cards was a sure sign of cost-cutting, versus a boxed-in I/O and slot panel. The grand inconvenience of the tab-style design was that the card had to be inserted and slid backward into position, and some motherboards might have audio capacitors near the back edge that the card’s inner tab could snag on. Also, some later motherboards had decorative plastic covers over the back edge that prevented certain cards from sliding into position if the opening above the tab was less than 19mm high.

More recently, this kind of design has been touted as a benefit of sorts, allowing case makers to advertise support for cards up to half an inch longer than would normally fit completely inside the case. The FLP03 allows for a few millimeters of extra clearance above the screw-down bracket to ease card fitment, so high-five to SilverStone for that.

Vented covers on the face panel are designed to filter air through a glued-on nylon screen, and that design could make washing these parts messy. (I’d recommend using compressed air to blow any dust out.) Here, you can also see how the bay cover, which resembles a floppy drive, uses its lever to latch in place.

A brace that crosses most of the motherboard space vertically supports a card bracket on its back side. It’s unsightly, but this case has no side window, so it’s no matter.

The brace comprises three brackets: The longest portion spans the motherboard opening vertically, and the shortest piece supports the card vertically (from drooping) and horizontally (from popping out), with two foam pads. A mid-sized piece connects the smaller and larger parts. Knurled screws fit slots to ease vertical and horizontal adjustment.

An eight-fan powered hub sits on the back of the FLP03’s removable bay device. The hub accepts PWM signals from a motherboard link cable (to one of the board’s fan headers) and draws power from the power supply (through a SATA drive power header).

Note also that the FLP03’s front drive cage supports only two 5.25-inch devices natively and requires the installation of (included) spacers to fill the two upper bays, as SilverStone opened that area up to otherwise accept extra-long, extra-thick top-panel radiators.

Taking a closer look at the top panel, two of its three sets of adjustment slots support up to three 120mm or up to two 140mm fans at various distances from the front or rear of the case. Another row of slots that might appear to fit a third size of fan isn’t for that; those slots are just for additional ventilation.

A second set of mounting holes on the power-supply shroud allows builders to move the graphics-card bracket 80mm closer to the rear panel, just in case your extra-short card is still heavy enough to need the support. The shroud also features threaded holes to mount two 120mm fans, rectangular holes to pass through motherboard and graphics power cables, and a giant gap at the front to support front-mounted radiators up to 66mm thick.

Indeed, looking at the cooling possibilities, it’s clear that the FLP03 isn’t a retro case with some new features; it’s a modern case with retro features tacked on. If you think that you’re seeing the lower portion of a 240mm side-radiator mount at the front of the motherboard tray, that’s because the front bay adapters are, indeed, screwed to one. Remove those parts, and the installation kit contains everything you’ll need to fit a big front radiator in its place (including an extra filler panel for the bay device that’s lost in the conversion).

Users of MicroATX motherboards with rear-facing connectors (Asus BTF, Gigabyte Stealth, MSI Project Zero) will find all the extra motherboard-tray holes that they might need, while those who wish to fit a Mini-ITX board in this space will even find a tiny square hole for feeding the case’s front audio cable to their board’s HD Audio header.

Notice that a second set of mounting tabs protrude from the FLP03’s bottom panel to support repositioning the lower drive cage a bit farther forward? The default position provides for the maximum (66mm) front-panel radiator clearance and 219mm of power-supply mounting space, while the forward position reduces radiator clearance to 45mm and increases the power-supply space to 240mm (all measurements approximate).

Prefer to fit five 2.5-inch drives and a single 3.5-inch drive, instead of three 2.5-inch drives and a pair of 3.5-inch drives? You can: The top of the 3.5-inch cage is drilled to allow cross-mounting of two 2.5-inch drives. That’s probably why SilverStone quotes 40mm less power-supply space than what we measured. Also, if you only need four 2.5-inch drives and want all of your power-supply mounting depth, the 3.5-inch drive cage has a third set of 2.5-inch drive-mounting holes in the normal direction. Whew!

Building With the SilverStone FLP03

With its dizzying mix of mounting points and removable components, you might have felt just a little lost in my FLP03 design discussion. The installation kit is where the rubber meets the road, though. 

It includes a set of adapter brackets to optionally mount three 120mm fans over the space originally occupied by its 180mm intake fan and bay adapter, plus a filler panel to cover the hole left by the removal of that bay device. It also includes two spacers to support the left rear mount of two 5.25-inch external devices (like optical drives!) if you install them into the case’s upper trays. Also in the kit: a set of keys (to lock down the power button on the bay device), several cable ties, and a kit of SilverStone’s standard hardware.

That standard hardware includes a bag of M3 and #6-32 mounting screws and standoffs for the motherboard, power supply, and drives; a bag of #6-32 extended screws for installing up to two 120mm fans atop the power supply shroud; a replacement snap for the front 180mm fan cover; and a #2 Phillips drive socket for installing and removing the hexagonal motherboard standoffs.

The front bay device connects to our motherboard via a 9-pin combined (buttons and LEDs) F_PANEL block and a PWM fan-header cable. Meanwhile, the case’s upper jacks connect via an HD Audio cable for its headphone and microphone jacks, a first-gen USB 3.0 cable for its two Type-A ports, and a Gen 2x2 cable for its Type-C port.

From there, things get a little muddy. I know from experience that the cable bundle for the redundant buttons and LEDs is probably wired as HDD LED +-, Power LED +-, Reset, and Power buttons in that order. But I can see that none of those connections are silkscreened onto the connectors.

In the course of the build, everything fit nicely, with the graphics card brace needing only minor adjustment to align perfectly with a raised portion of our card’s fan shroud.

Anyone remember those? The “something” in the bay is a 3.5-inch Iomega Zip drive on a 5.25-inch bay adapter, which is the closest-matching old-school device I could find in my hardware stash to the FLP03’s color. The sad part is that the 8 1/8-inch-deep beige optical drive that I couldn’t fit into the full-ATX FLP02 fits easily into the FLP03…but the color mismatch was just too ugly to live with.

As for the drive we decided not to use, a light mist of spray paint would have solved its color problem. Next time, off to Home Depot!

Testing the SilverStone FLP03

I’ll compare SilverStone’s latest MicroATX mid-tower to five previously reviewed samples in the following hardware configuration:

Concerned that the FLP03 showed slightly higher temperatures than the cases I compared it with, I removed the top dust filter as a potential restriction and watched temperatures drop by 5 degrees C at the CPU. That said, the top of the case looks so unfinished without this part that I chose not to include those results as a realistic configuration in our charts.

The FLP03 does a slightly better-than-average job of containing our component noise, but differences of less than 3db will barely be perceived by anyone who isn’t specifically listening for them.
