As internet fatigue collides with the 20-year nostalgia cycle, more and more young people yearn for flip phones. It makes sense; they’re cute, they’re trendy, and they won’t keep you paralyzed in bed on your fourth hour of doomscrolling. Enter Light, the distraction-free smartphone company, and its newest product: the Light Flip.
“Time and time again, we’ve heard from people – especially the younger generations - who love flip phones,” Light writes, “but the current options are poorly made, slow, unsupported, and often pre-installed with the same addictive apps built in. Light is taking everything that already works for tens of thousands of Light Phone users and is bringing that into a heavily desired yet timeless tactile form factor of a flip phone.”
Light Phones run on LightOS, a stripped-down version of Android that does away with social media apps and endless feeds, replacing them with strictly utilitarian tools such as a music player, alarm clock, and GPS. Unlike the giant operating systems, LightOS is designed to keep you on your phone “as little as possible.”
While standard Light Phones are compact, squarish touch-screen devices, the Light Flip switches up the formula with a touchless screen and a T9 keypad (with voice-to-text and audio messaging support included). Though narrow, the Flip is larger than other models, and chunky — 19mm thick when folded. It’s still significantly smaller than any of the smartphone giants, however.
The Light Flip features a matte 2.8-inch OLED screen, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. It also comes with a 50-megapixel camera and a replaceable 1,800 mAh battery, as well as 5G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity. Best of all, it has a headphone jack and even a charm loop.
The Light Flip retails at $299. The first batch of preorders will arrive in April 2027.
