A small black shelter dog named Eugene arrived looking timid, nervous, and much older than he actually was. Staff thought he was a quiet senior dog who just needed time to adjust after arriving at the shelter. But the moment they let him into the play yard, he completely changed their first impression. Eugene’s behavior at the shelter seemed to support that first impression. He was friendly but shy, got startled easily, and felt uncomfortable with sudden movements. His behaviorist asked handlers to move slowly around him, so staff believed they were caring for a calm, older dog who was struggling to adjust to the noisy shelter. Like many shelter dogs, Eugene felt overwhelmed by his new surroundings, making it hard for people to see his true personality.
That first impression disappeared almost immediately when a behaviorist took Eugene outside for his first play yard session. The shelter said Eugene walked into the play area quietly at first. But as soon as the behaviorist unclipped his leash, he burst into action. He dropped into a big play bow, raced around the yard, and bounced off the fences with excitement. His playful energy surprised everyone.
Since revealing his energetic side, Eugene has become a staff favorite. Orange County Animal Services describes the shelter dog as a small, affectionate, and fun-loving dog who enjoys spending time with people and gets along well with other dogs. Despite his lovable personality, Eugene has spent about a month at the shelter without finding a family.
In the video, staff describe him as "active just like a puppy" and "perfect in every way," adding that he is affectionate and enjoys being around other dogs. The rescue concluded its appeal with a simple message: "Let’s break through the noise. Let’s get him home."
