On this day seven years ago, one of the most iconic superhero movies of all time became the highest-grossing film ever.

2019 featured numerous blockbuster films, including the live-action edition of The Lion King and Joker, along with Parasite, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and Knives Out.

But on April 26, 2019, the highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame was released in theaters, the fourth installment of the Avengers series.

And on July 21, 2019, just under three months later, it became the world's highest-grossing movie of all time at $2.7902 billion. This pushed Avengers: Endgame past James Cameron's 2009 sci-fi hit Avatar, which at the time made $2.7897 billion at the box office.

While Avengers: Endgame broke the record at the time, it was Avatar that retook the lead as the world's highest-grossing movie after its re-release in theaters in China in 2021.

While Avengers: Endgame lost its record, it will still go down as one of the greatest casts ever seen. With a budget of roughly $360-$400 million, the cast included:

  • Robert Downey Jr. - Iron Man
  • Chris Evans - Captain America
  • Chris Hemsworth - Thor
  • Scarlett Johansson - Black Widow
  • Mark Ruffalo - The Hulk
  • Paul Rudd - Ant-Man
  • Benedict Cumberbatch - Dr. Strange
  • Tom Holland - Spider-Man
  • Chadwick Boseman - Black Panther

The film was the conclusion of the MCU's Infinity Saga and also Downey Jr.'s final film as Tony Stark. But the actor is set to return as Dr. Doom in the upcoming sequel to Avengers: Endgame called Avengers: Doomsday.
