Seth Meyers on Trump wanting to switch places with Ronaldo: ‘Watching Ronaldo run full-speed up and down a soccer pitch and you’re like, “That guy doesn’t work as hard as President Trump.”’

Seth Meyers discussed Donald Trump’s most recent comments on the World Cup, including his claim that players don’t work hard enough. On Late Night, the host spoke about a social media post from the US president where he thanked Rudy Giuliani’s son, Andrew, for helping to organise the tournament in the US. “It was already the biggest sporting event in the world,” Meyers pointed out. “It’s not like he sold 7m pickleball tickets.” This week has...

“It was already the biggest sporting event in the world,” Meyers pointed out. “It’s not like he sold 7m pickleball tickets.”

This week has also seen Trump engaging in a photo opportunity with the most recent Little League softball champions in the White House. “Wow, still chasing that World Cup final high, huh?” Meyers said.

After wildfires led to air quality issues over the past week in parts of the US, Trump criticised Canada for failing to take preventive measures. In a social media post, he said the “cost is incalculable”.

Meyers quipped: “So he didn’t write that post.”

Trump has also said that he wishes he could switch places with Cristiano Ronaldo, as he believes that his life is much easier than his. He said he would like to switch for about a month or so.

Meyers joked: “‘Or longer’, yelled Melania.”

He added: “Watching Ronaldo run full-speed up and down a soccer pitch and you’re like, ‘That guy doesn’t work as hard as President Trump.’”

This week has also seen the American Heart Association claim that five cups of coffee is a safe amount for someone to have in one day. Meyers showed a picture of Trump sleeping and joked “but you know, maybe start with one”.

A study also showed that 34% of people who choose to eat in their car tend to pick easier and more convenient food options. “That makes sense, it’s probably not the time or the place for tapas,” he said.

A German man has also broken a Guinness World Record this week after popping 60 balloons in 30 seconds using a plunger. “So the toilet is still clogged?” Meyers joked that his wife then said.

Trump has also claimed that he is “No 1” on TikTok. “‘Guess again, bitch,’ said Jimothy,” Meyers said referencing the Seattle raccoon who has recently gone viral.

“So glad to see it finally happening for Jimothy, he’s been at it for a long time,” he added.

Gullah Geechee influence is seen all over the US. Why does a notion of isolation prevail?

Gullah Geechee culture is sometimes viewed as static – a common narrative suggests that, isolated from the rest of the country, enslaved Africans and their descendants in the Sea Islands, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and North Carolina, created a language, tradition and society that insulated them from the mainland US. But this limited imagining deprives Gullah Geechee people of receiving full credit for their contributions to the US south...

‘Our system is in dire straits’: Progressive Democrats hold Medicare for All hearing

The Congressional Progressive caucus (CPC) held a shadow hearing on Medicare for All on Wednesday, led by Pramila Jayapal and Debbie Dingell. The hearing comes as over half of the House Democratic caucus has co-sponsored Medicare for All legislation, and Senator Andy Kim introduced legislation on Tuesday that would enroll all children into Medicare until the age of 26, while Republicans passed drastic healthcare cuts in the One Big Beautiful...

Zohran Mamdani, the New York City mayor, doubled down on his support for the international criminal court on Wednesday, a day after calling on federal authorities to execute the court’s warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu’s arrest should he visit the city in the fall. “I call on the federal government to join the international criminal court and to execute both this warrant as well as any warrant the international criminal court holds,” Mamdani told...

Thousands of immigrant children risk losing lawyers after Trump aid cuts

Thousands of immigrant children who came to the United States without being accompanied by a parent or guardian are now at imminent risk of losing the attorneys assisting on their legal cases, amid cuts in government funding, advocates warned this week. The Trump administration has severed ties with nearly a hundred legal organizations across the country that provide immigration advice and has been funneling kids into fast-tracked court...
