A Seoul district court on Wednesday fined Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon 10 million won for breaking political funding laws in connection with polling provided by the self-proclaimed political broker Myung Tae-kyun.
Elected officials in Korea are stripped of office if they receive a finalized penalty of 10 million won or more for violating the Political Funds Act, meaning that Oh will be removed from office as Seoul’s mayor if the Supreme Court upholds the district court’s sentence.
The Seoul Central District Court announced its ruling on Wednesday in a trial that concerned poll results that Oh is alleged to have received on a total of 10 occasions from Myung ahead of the Seoul mayor by-election in April 2021, which Oh won.
Oh faced trial for having his chief of staff pay a political backer upwards of 33 million won to relay to Myung. The court found that of this sum, 21 million won was payment for the polling in question.
The special counsel team that indicted Oh sought a prison sentence of 18 months and a fine of 33 million won.
