Scientists have released new guidance indicating that up to five cups of caffeinated coffee per day may be safe for most adults and could even lower the risk of several major heart conditions. The finding matters because caffeine has long carried mixed messaging in cardiology, with many patients told to limit or avoid it entirely. The new research suggests millions of coffee drinkers may not need to cut back — and that future recommendations could shift as experts learn more about how caffeine affects different people.
The American Heart Association (AHA) issued a new scientific statement concluding that up to 400 mg of caffeine per day — roughly three to five 8‑ounce cups of caffeinated coffee — is generally safe for most adults and may be linked to a lower risk of heart failure, heart disease, and stroke in some individuals. The statement also warns that high‑dose caffeine sources, especially energy drinks and energy shots, may increase blood pressure and trigger irregular heart rhythms, underscoring that not all caffeine is created equal.
What the New Research Shows
The AHA’s review highlights a growing body of evidence suggesting that moderate coffee consumption may support cardiovascular health. Researchers found that people who regularly drink caffeinated coffee tend to have lower rates of heart failure, coronary heart disease and stroke. Some randomized trials even show a reduced risk of atrial fibrillation among habitual coffee drinkers.
Scientists caution, however, that coffee’s benefits may come from more than caffeine alone. Coffee contains dozens of bioactive compounds — including antioxidants and anti‑inflammatory agents — that may help explain why both caffeinated and decaffeinated varieties have been associated with lower risks of certain conditions.
The statement also notes that filtered coffee does not raise LDL cholesterol, while unfiltered coffee — such as French press, Turkish or boiled coffee — contains cafestol, a compound shown to increase LDL levels.
How Guidance on Caffeine Has Evolved
Dr. Gregory M. Marcus, M.D., M.A.S., FAHA — chair of the scientific statement writing group and a professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco — told Newsweek that formal guidance on caffeine has been surprisingly limited until now. Earlier recommendations, he said, were “based more on conventional wisdom than science” and often advised patients with abnormal heart rhythms or high blood pressure to avoid caffeine entirely.
“Thanks to recent rigorously conducted trials, we now know that caffeinated coffee at least may in fact protect against the most common abnormal heart rhythm, called atrial fibrillation,” Marcus said. He added that caffeine’s relationship with blood pressure “can potentially go either way,” depending on the individual.
Marcus noted that cardiology guidelines have only recently begun to acknowledge caffeine directly, with the first formal recommendation stating that avoiding caffeine offers no benefit for patients with atrial fibrillation.
Marcus said the new findings raise an intriguing possibility: whether clinicians might one day recommend caffeinated coffee for certain patients. For now, he cautions that the evidence is not strong enough to support prescribing caffeine for cardiovascular benefit. But the emerging signals — particularly around atrial fibrillation and heart failure risk — suggest future studies could lay the groundwork for more definitive guidance.
Why Energy Drinks Are Different
While coffee appears safe for most adults, the AHA warns that energy drinks and energy shots can contain 3–4 times as much caffeine per ounce as regular coffee. These products may:
- Spike blood pressure
- Trigger arrhythmias
- Increase cardiovascular strain, especially in younger adults
Case reports have documented arrhythmias in otherwise healthy people shortly after consuming high‑dose energy drinks.
How Caffeine Affects the Body
Caffeine reaches peak concentration in the bloodstream within an hour and is metabolized differently depending on genetics, age, medications and past caffeine use.
Short‑term effects may include temporary increases in blood pressure, elevated heart rate, heightened alertness and occasional palpitations or sleep disruption.
Because responses vary widely, experts emphasize that what’s safe for one person may cause symptoms in another.
Dr. Ethan Korngold, a cardiologist who serves as Chief Medical Officer for Abbott’s Vascular business, told Newsweek that the new findings represent a meaningful shift in how clinicians may talk about caffeine.
“For decades, cardiologists cautioned patients on coffee, and this research challenges that conventional wisdom in a meaningful way. We’re now seeing that caffeine, in the right amounts and from the right sources, may actually protect the heart rather than harm it. That’s an important distinction that may change future conversations in the exam room. And on a personal level, as a third‑wave coffee obsessive, I’m delighted to see encouraging news about one of my favorite hobbies!”
Do Additives Change Coffee’s Benefits?
Marcus said rigorous studies have not yet determined how creamers, flavored syrups or sugar might alter coffee’s cardiovascular effects. But he noted that it is “not unreasonable to extrapolate” that added sugars and syrups likely reduce potential benefits.
Interestingly, most observational research showing positive effects of coffee was conducted among people drinking their coffee as they normally would — meaning any benefits appear to persist even when additives are present. Marcus said this could suggest that the benefits exist despite sweeteners or that they might be even stronger without them.
What About Tea, Soda and Other Caffeinated Drinks?
Although the statement focuses heavily on coffee, Marcus said many of the findings likely apply to caffeinated teas, which have also been associated with reduced risks of atrial fibrillation, heart failure and stroke.
Sodas, however — caffeinated or not — carry separate risks. Marcus pointed to extensive evidence linking sugary drinks to Type 2 diabetes and obesity, which in turn increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, heart failure, stroke and death.
Energy drinks remain the biggest concern. “The studies that are available have suggested these products may lead to harm,” Marcus said.
Despite encouraging findings, the AHA says more randomized controlled trials are needed to understand how caffeine affects different people and how non‑coffee sources influence heart health. Because of limited data, caffeine was not included in the AHA’s 2026 Dietary Guidance for cardiovascular health.
