Scary Movie is coming to digital very soon. The sixth installment of the Scary Movie franchise saw the grand return of Marlon, Shawn, and Keenan Ivory Wayans to the writing room after they left the series following creative differences after Scary Movie 2 (2001). Rather than following on from Scary Movie 5 (2013), Scary Movie is instead viewed as a spiritual successor to the first two films, and just like them, it would not be pulling punches. The trailer gave viewers a window into what to expect when they sat down in cinemas on Jun. 5.
And what a turnout it was as Scary Movie saw a stellar opening day, taking in $24.7 million domestically from 3,490 cinemas (via Variety). That set a huge record for the franchise by beating Scary Movie 4's opening day in 2006 ($49.7 million), leaving competing releases like Masters of the Universe in the dust. But it didn't stop there. According to Box Office Mojo, the film has grossed approximately $230 million, making a domestic daily estimate of $107 million as of Jul. 19. And now, Scary Movie will be making its way onto digital streaming rather quickly.
It has been announced that Scary Movie is set to hit digital PVOD platforms on Jul. 21. The horror spoof sequel will be available to rent or purchase on digital streaming platforms such as Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and YouTube Movies & TV. As for the expected price point, the film is estimated at a $19.99 rental cost within the first 48 hours, as is customary with new releases, while $24.99 is expected for a purchase price.
Scary Movie not only sees the return of Marlon and Shawn Wayans as Shorty Meeks and Ray Wilkins, but also a whole former cast reunion, as Anna Faris (Cindy Campbell) and Regina Hall (Brenda Meeks) return as their respective characters from the franchise. Other Scary Movie alums include Cheri Oteri (Gail Hailstorm) and Dave Sheridan (Doofy Gilmore), while the newer cast features Olivia Rose Keegan (Sara Campbell), Cameron Scott Roberts (Jack Kirsch), Savannah Lee Nassif (Tuesday Campbell), Gregg Wayans (Brad Meeks) and Sydney Park (Dei Meeks).
The film's premise follows the original group reuniting when Ghostface from Scary Movie starts up his killing spree once again and parodies several recent horror flicks, including Scream, Sinners, The Substance, Get Out, Weapons, and M3GAN, amongst many others.
