Ed Alonzo looks a bit different when he’s not dressing up as his magician character.
The Saved by the Bell star, 63, portrayed magician and diner owner Max in the hit sitcom, and was known for round glasses and poufy hair.
The comedian was a main cast member in the show’s first season, which aired in 1989, and then made a few guest appearances in seasons 2 and 4. Ed Alonzo reprised his role for a couple episodes in the Saved by the Bell reboot, which ran for two seasons from 2020 to 2021 on Peacock.
In photos posted on Instagram over the last few months, Alonzo could be seen without his glasses, sporting longer hair that made him appear almost unrecognizable from his signature look.
In 2020, Alonzo appeared on the Zack to the Future podcast hosted by Saved by the Bell castmate Mark-Paul Gosselaar and reboot writer Dashiell Driscoll. In the episode, Alonzo talked about how, before he even auditioned for Saved by the Bell, he created a persona that made him stand out from other magicians.
“’89 was the very first episode of Saved by the Bell, and I had kind of developed a character for my magic act maybe three years prior to this,” he recalled. “And what I had changed from being the regular suave magician is I changed my hairstyle, and I put on some glasses, little round Harold Lloyd-type glasses, and it kind of changed the way I walked and moved, and I really put a lot of effort to making this a character magician, an actor playing the part of a magician, and it changed my life overnight.”
