Samsung’s fundamentally restructured Galaxy Fold lineup now gives buyers three distinct experiences.

For years, buying Samsung’s book-style foldable was simple—you picked the Galaxy Z Fold. That's changing this time. The company has overhauled its foldable lineup with a new member and naming scheme that might trip up even loyal fans. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 debuts Samsung’s brand-new wider design, while the usual tall and narrow foldable now carries the ‘Ultra’ badge.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 steals the show

A phablet experience

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the biggest evolution in Samsung’s book-style foldables since the original model. The wider footprint makes it almost the size of a wallet in a folded state and a compact tablet once opened. The device is lightweight, tipping the scales at 201 grams, but it is slightly thicker than the Ultra model. The change reduces the narrow, remote-control-like feel that defined the standard Galaxy Fold until now.

The cover display on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a 5.5-inch FHD+ panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Unfold it, and you get a 7.6-inch inner screen with QXGA+ resolution that offers room for multitasking, media consumption, and productivity. The experience feels closer to Apple’s iPad Mini while still slipping comfortably in your pocket.

On the imaging front, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 features a 50MP primary sensor with 2x in-sensor zoom and a 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,900.

Samsung isn’t forgetting the Fold and Flip

Despite the new branding, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra arrives with incremental changes. It continues the traditional fold proportions with a 6.5-inch outer screen matching the same resolution as the predecessor. The 8-inch internal display resolution gets upgraded to 2,256 x 2,504 pixels, so you can expect a sharper viewing experience.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra retains the 200MP primary camera along with a 10MP telephoto unit. However, the ultra-wide-angle camera now gets an upgraded 50MP lens for capturing detailed landscape pictures.

The book-style folding phone carries a starting price tag of $2,100.

As for the Galaxy Z Flip 8, Samsung isn’t messing with the formula that made it the brand’s most popular foldables. This means the same 6.9-inch main screen, a 4.1-inch cover display on the back, 50MP + 12MP rear cameras, and a 4,300mAh battery cell with 15W fast charging. The device gets a minor but quality-of-life update as more apps can now run on the cover screen without opening the device.

The clamshell flip phone will be available for $1,199.

Shared specs across the lineup

Same Galaxy DNA

While all three phones differ in form factors, Samsung has standardized much of the core hardware across the lineup. The eighth-generation Galaxy Z family is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and ships with OneUI 9-based Android 17 out of the box. The two book-style models offer up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, while the Flip 8 tops out at 12GB and 512GB. They also support 45W fast charging, although the Z Fold 8 is backed by a 4,800mAh cell while the Z Fold 8 Ultra maxes out at a 5,000mAh battery.

Both the inner and outer AMOLED screens feature brighter panels, 120Hz adaptive refresh rates, symmetrical bezels, and dual 10MP cameras for selfies (single on the Flip 8). Samsung is using a new “Flex Titanium” hinge to improve the durability and minimize the visible display crease caused by folding and unfolding.

Video recording is capped at 4K at 60fps from front cameras, while the rear cameras on Fold 8 and 8 Ultra can shoot up to 8K at 30fps.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup benefits from Google’s Gemini Intelligence, enabling cross-app automations across 40+ supported apps. The phones come with Samsung’s Galaxy AI suite of features.

All three foldable phones come in Graphite and Cream color options, along with online-exclusive shades. Samsung is offering six months of Google AI Pro with the purchase. Pre-orders begin today with shipments commencing August 7, 2026.

Samsung’s foldables refresh this year isn’t just about faster processors or better cameras. Instead, the brand is acknowledging that there are different kinds of foldable buyers—each with their own preference.
