In just a few days, fans will be able to stream The Exorcismon another fan-favorite platform. It's even coming hot on the heels of several other hit horror titles.
Horror fans have plenty to look forward to on Netflix this month. Currently, The Exorcism starring Russell Crowe is slated to join the Netflix streaming library on July 28, just days after the additions of numerous entries in the Scream franchise and all three seasons of Hannibal.
2024's The Exorcism Wasn't Quite the Breakthrough Horror Fans Hoped It Would Be
Directed by Joshua John Miller from a screenplay co-written alongside M. A. Fortin, The Exorcism stars Russell Crowe as Anthony Miller, an aging, alcoholic actor who is tapped to portray the leading priest in a new supernatural horror film after its original star is suddenly and mysteriously killed. Miller is joined by his daughter, Lee, who serves as his personal assistant and quickly becomes worried about his ailing condition.
Between being openly belittled and berated by the film's director, Adam Goldberg's Peter, and his personal traumas resurfacing, Miller quickly takes a downward spiral that threatens the entire production. To make matters worse, this behavior soon reveals itself to be the result of a very real demonic possession, much like the one at the center of The Exorcism's film set.
The Exorcism also stars Chloe Bailey and TV actress Blake Holloway, Sam Worthington as Miller's replacement Joe, and David Hyde Pierce as Father Conor. Rounding out the core cast of the film are Adrian Pasdar, Tracey Bonner, Samantha Mathias, Marcenae Lynette, and director Joshua John Miller himself.
Unfortunately, The Exorcism failed to make much of an impression on critics or audiences upon its release. Over the course of its theatrical run, The Exorcism grossed just $12.6 million, all while receiving generally negative reviews. As of the time of writing, The Exorcism holds a mere 35% audience-generated "Popcornmeter" score via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and an even lower 27% critical "rotten" rating on the platform.
Horror Fans Have at Least One More Exorcism to Look Forward to on the Silver Screen
Currently, horror fans are eagerly awaiting the release of modern genre luminary Mike Flanagan's The Exorcist: Martyrs. Set in the same universe as the 1973 horror masterpiece The Exorcist, which was based on William Peter Blatty's 1971 novel of the same name, The Exorcist: Martyrs is set to revisit many of the same concepts, albeit while avoiding rebooting or reimagining the entire franchise. The film doesn't have an official plot yet.
The Exorcist: Martyrs is set to star Scarlett Johansson as a rookie detective who is embroiled in a world of evil unlike any she could have possibly imagined for herself. Alongside Johansson, The Exorcist: Martyrs features a star-studded ensemble cast that includes Diane Lane, Jacobi Jupe, Laurence Fishburne, John Leguizamo, Rahul Kohli, Hamish Linklater, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Carla Gugino, and Kate Siegel.
The Exorcism will be available for streaming on Netflix on July 28.
