There is nothing more difficult in sports than hitting a baseball.
Just a fraction of an inch can separate a player from hitting a flyball to left field and, say, tying a franchise record for career home runs.
That was the case Monday night during the Royals’ 4-3 win over the Giants at Kauffman Stadium. Catcher Salvador Perez hit a monster blast to center field in the fourth inning for his 316th career home run, one away from Hall of Famer George Brett’s career record for the Royals.
Perez very nearly tied Brett in the eighth inning. Instead, the ball traveled just 348 feet to left-center field and the Giants’ Drew Gilbert easily made the catch. While Michael Massey was batting, broadcasters Jake Eisenberg and Jeremy Guthrie were talking about how Perez wants to tie the record at The K.
The Royals.TV broadcast showed Perez in the dugout, and he knew the announcers were talking about him just missing the home run. Perez smiled at the camera and then held his thumb and forefinger close together to indicate he knew that it was thisclose to being a home run.
But that’s why hitting is so difficult. You can be off by just an inch on a swing and make an out instead of hitting one out.
But in this instance, it made for another fun moment with Perez.
