Queen Camilla and King Charles finally got their happy ending when they married in April 2005, but their journey to the altar carried the weight of a complicated history. In her book Divide and Rule, royal author Catherine Mayer claims Camilla felt "a little broken" on her wedding day, reluctant to face the public eye despite being officially welcomed into the royal fold. The ceremony's inclusion of traditional prayers acknowledging "manifold sins and wickedness" reportedly served as a painful reminder of their past affair, casting a shadow over what should have been the happiest day of her life.
In her book Divide and Rule: Royal Women and Their Battles, Mayer discussed Camilla's high-profile wedding to the future King. Reflecting on the then-future Queen's emotions on her big day, she penned, "When dawn finally broke on her happiest day, Camilla reportedly felt a little broken too, reluctant to emerge from under her duvet. When she did, it was to a service that joined her and Charles in the prayer of preparation, an admission of 'manifold sins and wickedness' written by Thomas Cranmer for Henry VIII." This explicit acknowledgment of their "sins and wickedness" reportedly served as a stark reminder of the tumultuous journey that brought Charles and Camilla back together, which ultimately led to the breakdown of both of their first marriages.
However, Mayer clarified that despite the painful memories brought up by the prayer, Camilla moved forward with a brave face: "Still, this daughter and ex-wife of military men has never allowed adversity to rain on her parade." She continued, "Photographers captured the couple laughing as they posed on the steps of the Chapel after the blessing, while the wind tried to whip away the feathered confection Camilla had chosen in place of a more traditional tiara. It was a glimpse of a key dynamic between them," highlighting a bond rooted in humor and banter.
The royal author also explored King Charles's historic discomfort when photographed alongside his late ex-wife, Princess Diana, contrasting it with the genuine ease he shares with Camilla. She stressed, "He [Charles] and Camilla, by contrast, tend to mirror each other, engaging with a sustaining intimacy that is instantly recognizable and impossible to counterfeit." Despite Camilla's reported anxieties, the wedding proceeded seamlessly at the Windsor Guildhall, followed by a service of prayer and dedication at St. George's Chapel led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams.
That being said, Camilla and Charles have now been married for over 21 years, with their relationship going stronger than ever. Commenting on their enduring love story, body language expert Darren Stanton branded them 'the most compatible royal couple.' As reported by the Royal Insider, he stressed, "We're talking about a 50-year-plus romance. They've [Charles and Camilla] been in love a long time. It's been an intense relationship where they've had to overcome a lot."
