Key Points

  • Robin Williams’ son Zak wished his father a happy 75th birthday Tuesday.
  • The star of Good Will Hunting and Mrs. Doubtfire died in 2014 at 63.
  • The comedian had three children: Zak, 43, as well as daughter Zelda, 36, and son Cody, 34.

Robin Williams died more than a decade ago, but the comedian was on his son Zak’s mind Tuesday, on what would have been a milestone birthday for the star of movies including Good Will Hunting, Mrs, Doubtfire, and The Birdcage.

“Happy 75th Dad!” Zak wrote on social media. “Today I’m remembering your weirdness and your extraordinary capacity to love. I remember those wrinkles in the corners of your eyes, the kind you get from a lifetime of smiling. I remember your unending need to see this world free of human and animal suffering.”

A photo of Williams in one of his most famous roles, Mork on the sitcom Mork & Mindy, which ran for four seasons beginning in 1978, accompanied Zak’s words.

He encouraged his dad’s fans to pay tribute as well.

“For those out there who’d like to celebrate with me, go do something kind for someone,” Zak wrote. “Make someone laugh. Put a little more good into the world.”

He ended his message with, “Love you forever.”

The star of such movies as Good Morning, Vietnam; Aladdin; One Hour Photo; Hook; and many more died by suicide on Aug. 11, 2014, after struggling with severe depression and the early stages of Parkinson’s disease. He was 63.

Zak, 43, is his son with his first wife, Valerie Velardi, whom the comedian was married to from 1978 to 1988. (The Birdcage star later welcomed daughter Zelda, 36, and son Cody, 34, with second wife, Marsha Garces.)

The senior Williams married Susan Schneider in 2011.

In November 2015, Schneider said she blamed his death on another factor, which had been cited in the coroner’s report.

“It was not depression that killed Robin,” she told PEOPLE. “Depression was one of let’s call it 50 symptoms and it was a small one.”

She explained, “This was a very unique case and I pray to God that it will shed some light on Lewy bodies for the millions of people and their loved ones who are suffering with it. Because we didn’t know. He didn’t know.”

In 2020, Zelda, an actress and filmmaker, acknowledged her father’s spirit when she suggested that fans who wanted to remember him with her should donate $69.69 to local homeless shelters.

“Join me if you like, but regardless, know I am wishing you all at least one hearty, immature belly laugh on Dad today,” she wrote.
