Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet admitted that it will “probably be impossible” to make his return before Aug. 23 during a session with local media on Tuesday.

If the point is to get him back to full strength and put him in a position to succeed for the stretch run, why is that seemingly arbitrary date the one at the front of everyone’s minds?

Crochet, who has been dealing with a left shoulder injury that has included several setbacks leaving him on the injured list since April 29, is rapidly approaching a key date in the contract that he signed prior to last season, which stipulates that spending 120 consecutive days on the injured list because of an arm problem erases his ability to opt out following the 2030 season and instead gives the Red Sox a $15 million team option for 2032.
TLDR; If he spends another month on the injured list, the team gets two extra years of control.
Crochet doesn’t seem too upset by that idea, though, giving the organization and city two thumbs up when asked about potentially sticking around for longer than everyone initially thought.
“It sucks, but I mean, what’s the worst thing that happens? I’m in Boston for another year? Which is pretty good. This is a place that I wanted to be,” Crochet said, as transcribed by Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. “That was a clause that was kind of helping the team mitigate the risk, I suppose. And they knew that there was risk. I knew that there was risk. Last year, it’s like, am I outperforming [his salary]? Or does it matter? And now I get hurt, and it’s like, I’m glad that I secured the protection.
“What I felt when I signed the contract was that I wanted to outperform the deal. So it sucks, but there’s still time.”

Crochet’s focus is just on returning, whether that comes before or after his contract receives some major updates. The Red Sox are winners of 14 consecutive games entering their day-night doubleheader with the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, and the southpaw wants to find not only a way to be a part of their run, but to succeed while doing so.
If that means taking an extra few weeks, so be it.
