Red Sox Game 2 lineup: Rookie lefty on mound as team takes aim at record book

BOSTON — History is on the line for the nightcap at Fenway Tuesday night: the Red Sox are in position to break an 80-year-old franchise record.

In winning the first game of Wednesday’s day-night doubleheader, the Red Sox tied the 1946 Red Sox with their 15th straight victory. The Sox can establish a club record by winning the nightcap.

In the post-expansion era, only four teams — the 1977 Kansas City Royals, the 2021 St. Louis Cardinals, the 2002 Oakland A’s and the 2017 Cleveland Indians — have constructed longer winning streaks than the 15-game run the Sox currently own.

The win in the first game means the Sox remain a perfect 6-0 in the second half, all of the wins coming at home. It also gave the Sox wins in each of their last five series. A win Wednesday night would give the team five straight series (minimum: three games) sweeps for the first time in club history.

Meanwhile, the Boston bullpen has allowed just seven earned runs over the last 15 games, covering 58.1 innings, resulting in an ERA of 1.08.

The Red Sox added lefty Alec Gamboa as their 27th man for the doubleheader, providing one more option in the bullpen.

The Sox had hoped to have Ranger Suarez start Wednesday night but the veteran lefty pushed himself hard in a workout Monday and is feeling a bit under the weather. As such, Eduardo Rivera will get the start.
