Evan Carter is still trying to break out at the plate for the Rangers, but his defense has always given him a solid baseline.
The center fielder has made some spectacular grabs while with the organization, including a home run robbery of the Pittsburgh Pirates' O' Neil Cruz earlier this year. Carter was on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM) on Tuesday, and while he didn't talk about that play specifically, he alluded to how much he enjoys contributing with his glove.
"I would say robbing a homer, just because it happens way less," said Carter, when asked whether he'd prefer to hit or rob a homer.
The ability to make the highlight-reel catches wouldn't be possible, however, without the right mental and physical preparation, and Carter mentioned they have been the real keys to his defensive success.
"I think always dialing in a pre-pitch routine and putting yourself in the best position that you can to react as quickly as possible," he said. "You know, working with Janko [Travis Jankowski] as the outfield coach here, obviously he was a very successful outfielder in his time in the big leagues, and we really put an emphasis on our first step reaction times, rather than being more accurate where my first step is going."
Carter has struggled again with the bat this year, particularly against left-handed pitching. But if his offense can catch up to his Gold-Glove caliber defense in the second half of the season, it could have big impact on the Rangers' postseason hopes.
