ARLINGTON – Another day, another pitching move.
This time the Rangers will stop the conveyor belt of rotating rookie relievers and select the contract of veteran lefty Marco Gonzales to help backfill innings in the bullpen. Gonzales, 34, had made four starts at Triple-A Round Rock since signing a minor league deal a month ago.
He is intended to replace right-hander Jose Corniell, who would be optioned back to Round Rock. Corniell, 23, has allowed 10 runs in 4 1/3 innings over two brief stints with the Rangers. He has hurt himself with four walks.
But, save for 30-year-old rookie Peyton Gray, most of the Rangers' rookie relievers, thrust into various roles, have struggled this year. Corniell, Emiliano Teodo, Gavin Collyer, Winston Santos and Robbie Ahlstrom have combined for a 7.28 ERA in 47 innings this season.
While no move has been made official, Corniell is the likely odd man out.
Gonzales, a long-time starter, has not pitched in the majors since 2024. He missed all of 2025 recovering from an injury. He has not made a relief appearance since 2017.
