Recent reports indicated that it isn't a lock that defensive superstar Aaron Donald will end his retirement and rejoin the Los Angeles Rams to play alongside two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett later this fall.
During a recent interview with NFL insider Jason La Canfora of "The Daily Flock" podcast, Rams head coach Sean McVay offered somewhat of an update on the biggest story hovering over his franchise ahead of the start of training camp.
Aaron Donald is "thinking about" playing for Rams during 2026 season
"I have crossed paths with Aaron Donald," McVay said, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "...What he’s going to do is, he is thinking about this. He’s going to go through his process. And the one thing about Aaron Donald is, what he does, he does it full speed ahead."
Donald retired in March 2024 as a one-time Super Bowl champion and a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year. It has recently been said that the 35-year-old "was very happy in retirement" and is "not gonna come back until he feels like he's ready to be Aaron Donald again."
It remains to be seen if Donald will feel like he can reclaim his old form before the Rams open the regular season against the rival San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia, on Sept. 10 (8:35 p.m. ET). On Tuesday, NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN suggested that Donald may not rejoin the Rams "until early in the season."
It's unclear exactly what that means, and it sounds like McVay doesn't have an answer to such questions.

"What’s special is, we have a really special relationship," McVay added about Donald. "It’s way bigger than football. I’ve heard him say it before, and it means the world to me — and I feel the same — it’s family with us. He’s done so much for me. I love the man he is. I love the husband, the father, the son — he represents a lot of the things that are right."
Veteran Rams players are due to report for training camp on July 25. While things often change quickly in the NFL, it seems as if those hoping McVay will have a massive Donald-related announcement to share on that day should probably put those hopes to bed.
