When Jürgen Klopp formally takes over the job and starts his mission to lead Germany into a new era, one of his first major decisions could be what to do with the captaincy.
Joshua Kimmich has worn the armband through a period of significant transition for the national team. He has been one of Germany’s most experienced and influential players, and his leadership qualities have never really been in question. He is vocal, demanding and willing to take responsibility, both on and off the pitch.
There is also a strong argument that Kimmich should remain captain because continuity matters. Germany have already gone through several difficult transitions in recent years, and constantly changing leaders can create even more instability. If Kimmich remains an important starter, keeping him as captain could be the logical choice.
However, Klopp may also see the arrival of a new coach as an opportunity for a complete reset. A new captain could symbolize a new era, especially if Klopp wants to build the team around a younger core. Players such as Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, or Nico Schlotterbeck could potentially bring a different type of leadership.
