PSG postpones return as several key players could miss summer finals

Paris Saint-Germain will return to training with a severely depleted squad. To respect the recovery time of its many international players, the club has decided to stagger their returns to the PSG Campus.

PSG were initially scheduled to resume training on Saturday, but the restart has been pushed back by two days. According to Le Parisien, the first collective session is now officially set for Monday, July 27. Matvey Safonov, Lucas Chevalier, Dro, Senny Mayulu, Illia Zabarnyi, Lucas Beraldo and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are among those expected to be present from the opening days.

World Cup Players Given Extended Rest

PSG plan to grant four weeks of holiday to every player who took part in the World Cup, calculated from the date their national team was eliminated. This will lead to gradual returns over several weeks. Willian Pacho and Ibrahim Mbaye are expected back in early August, while Vitinha, João Neves and Marquinhos could be available for the Trophée des Champions against Lens on August 16. Achraf Hakimi’s situation appears more complicated, however, as his later elimination could leave him short of fitness for the first fixtures.

Fabian Ruiz and the French internationals will be given only three weeks of rest because they featured in either the World Cup final or the third-place play-off. Even with this reduced break, Lucas Hernandez, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Désiré Doué, Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembélé, Lucas Digne and Ruiz could miss both the European Super Cup against Aston Villa on August 12 and the Trophée des Champions four days later.

Only an early return from their holidays would allow them to be considered for those matches, although the PSG staff are not expected to take any risks after such a demanding tournament. Nuno Mendes will also be monitored closely after suffering an injury in the round of 16 against Spain. The Portuguese defender will be given all the time he needs, meaning PSG could begin the season without several major players and gradually rebuild their squad as they return.
